Research scientist as PhD student in the field of digital voltage generators for particle accelerators

The Coburg University of Applied Sciences is looking for a

Research scientist in the field of applied physics

to start as soon as possible.

There is a PhD opportunity as part of the third-party funded project DISWAG (Digital Soft Square Wave Generator for Particle Accelerators).

In medicine, small cyclotrons are compact generators for short-lived radioisotopes. Typical voltage generators used for this purpose have a fixed frequency due to the electrical resonance principle.

This, combined with limited variability in the magnetic field, leads to a tight binding to certain materials or isotopes per generator.

DISWAG is intended to replace the typical fixed-frequency, analog or electron beam tube-generated sinusoidal acceleration voltage for particle accelerators with a digitally controllable, rectangular one.

The aim is to enable a multi-isotope compact system with a dynamically adjustable accelerator frequency.

Your tasks:

  • Independent research activities in the field of multifrequency control topologies for small cyclotrons
  • Conception and realization of methods for digital controlling of acceleration systems
  • Conception and realization of digital power amplifiers and transformers in highvoltage operation
  • Participation in the supervision of students in the context of project work and final theses
  • Presentation of results to external cooperation partners and at specialist events
  • Preparation of scientific publications in internationally renowned journals

Your profile:

  • Successfully completed relevant scientific university studies (master's degree) in the field of applied physics, electrical engineering or related disciplines
  • Solid knowledge of physics in test design and conceptualization, preferably in the field of highvoltage circuit design or power electronics
  • You like to take the initiative and are able to familiarize yourself quickly, independently and flexibly with new topics
  • We require analytical and structured thinking, the ability to work in a team and reliability
  • Experience in the field of circuit technology, digital and analog technology and hardwarerelated programming is desired
  • Very good knowledge of English and German

We offer:

  • A varied job in a young, dynamic and committed team at the frontline of science and technology
  • The opportunity to do a PhD
  • Intensive contacts with cooperation partners from industry and research with starting points for future career development
  • Flexible working hours
  • Support for further professional qualification

The employment relationship concluded with the Free State of Bavaria is full-time and is initially limited to 3 years (40,10 hours/week) and is initially limited to three years.

There is the possibility of part-time employment (50%). The position is classified in pay group 13 of the TV-L.
There is the possibility of further academic qualification (PhD).

Severely disabled applicants will be given preference if their aptitude, qualifications and professional performance are otherwise essentially equal.

In the case of foreign university degrees, a certificate evaluation from the ZAB must be submitted to assess the recruitment requirements
