Who we are...
Our primary focuses at Fraunhofer IWES are on wind energy and hydrogen technologies.

Our institute is home to more than 300 scientists and employees as well as around 150 students from over 30 countries pursuing careers in applied research and development at seven sites.

We secure investments in technological developments through validation, shorten innovation cycles, accelerate certification procedures, and increase planning accuracy by means of innovative measurement methods.


This team is looking for you...
You will be heading the »Hydrogen Labs and Field Tests« department together with another head of department.

While your colleague's main area of focus is wind energy field measurements and the hydrogen lab Bremerhaven, you will be in charge of the hydrogen labs Leuna and Görlitz.

The department, which is structured into four groups, currently consists of a total of 21 research associates and technical employees as well as several students.

It works on developing and operating research infrastructure for the hydrogen economy as well as on analytics and electrochemistry.

The department's main focus is on testing plants for green hydrogen production and use on an industrial scale as well as on a laboratory scale.

We support each other irrespective of our projects and backgrounds. A culture of open exchange and cooperation, even beyond team boundaries and sites, are particularly important to us.


What you will do

These duties awaiting you...

Within the department, you will act as the first point of contact and represent the department's interests both within and outside the institute.

Whether answering a variety of technical questions or having personal conversations - you will always be ready to listen to your colleagues.

You will be responsible for developing hydrogen labs across multiple sites and placing them in the right locations. In particular, you will be involved in the initial phase, helping to establish infrastructure and commission the hydrogen labs. You will be responsible for two of the department's group managers, holding the yearly personnel interview with them. Furthermore, you will also be involved in the continuing education and skills development of all department employees. You will work with your management team to determine the strategic direction of the whole department. When it comes to the strategy process for the entire institute, you will bring your ideas to the table. You will also be responsible for the department's financial planning activities as well as the associated budget. You will report the latest developments in your department directly to institute management.

If this is in your wheelhouse, you are perfect for us Alongside your management activities, you will secure new industry projects and initiate publicly funded research projects at a national and international level.

You will contribute to the content and strategy behind the creation of offers and project proposals. You will also be involved in substantive negotiations and contractual matters, e.g., for R&D contracts or cooperation agreements. The lawyers will take charge of any legal aspects. Furthermore, you will represent your department at networking events, interacting with representatives from politics, science and industry. You will be in charge of overseeing large-scale projects, while department employees will be responsible for the technical aspects.


What you bring to the table

What is your specialist background?
You have completed your diploma or master's degree in Process Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Technical Chemistry or another related field. Your proven expertise in hydrogen is backed by several years of experience in the field.

Do you have experience in chemical plant engineering? Perfect Maybe you have even touched upon systems operation in the past? This is also a plus.

Are you familiar with modern digital models and methods? If so, you would be a great fit for us.

Are you able to communicate with both internal and external target groups and address any concerns they may have? We would be happy if you could use these skills from the get-go.
