We are looking for a Process Engineer who is focusing on process development using theoretical models and scale-down-models as appropriate to support the project needs in fill-finish-manufacturing of biologics.

The Process Engineering Sciences (PES) Group was established to bring a process engineering approach into the biopharmaceutical world.

Depending on the background, the senior scientist has the opportunity to introduce new methods regarding small-scale models as well as computational modeling (e.g., digital twins) into process development.

The main area will be the support of the biologics drug product development for injectable drugs with a main focus on heat transfer, thermo
- and fluid dynamics being applied to freezing & thawing, mixing, sterile filtration, pumping, filling and lyophilization.

It will incorporate the evaluation and implementation of two key technologies:
process simulation and optimized bench experiments.

Hands-on experience from bench experiments or manufacturing data will be translated into the development of digital twins to result in optimized new ways of computational models to develop processes.


That means:

  • Supervision of interns and bachelor/master students in lab or modelling topics.
  • Serve as modeling expert to Drug Product Development and the R&D organization in general.
  • Help the organization to understand and implement simulations into a routine development philosophy.
  • Generate data from bench experiments where necessary to verify and validate simulation models.
  • Share knowledge and educate others in the organization in using simulation software where appropriate.
  • Use of Quality by Design (QbD) approach.
  • Evaluation of novel software tools
  • Independently work on scientific topics, implement new technologies, drive global initiatives and present results convincingly to diverse audiences.

This is how you make a difference:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience in industry (pharma, biopharma preferred, but not mandatory), Master's Degree or equivalent education and typically 8 years of experience (pharma, biopharma preferred, but not mandatory), PhD and no experience necessary, ideally in process engineering, bio-process-engineering or in computational engineering
  • Proven experience in both computational engineering and process engineering
  • Excellent process engineering skills (heat transfer, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics)
  • Structured thinking
  • Independent way of working with strong decision skills
  • Present outcome of work to a broad audience from different areas via presentations, posters and/or reports
  • Able to develop quick, mínimally viable packages to convince organization of working concepts, while still driving project towards the longterm goal
  • Willing to integrate in a team with a strong will to improve processes and efficiency
  • Excellent spoken and written English skills
Desired add on Qualifications

  • Experience with biotechnological manufacturing processes and protein analytics
- experience with CFD or other 3D-simulation methodologies

  • Pragmatic, smart decision making in relation to "good enough for this purpose"
  • Programming skills in Python, C++
  • Proficient German language skills
