EMBL is Europe's flagship laboratory for the life sciences - an intergovernmental organisation with more than 80 independent research groups covering the spectrum of molecular biology.

EMBL has approx.

1900 staff from over 80 nations working at EMBL Headquarters in Heidelberg and five sites across Europe (Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome).

The EMBL Archive ́ ́ ́ ́ s mission is to collect, manage, preserve and make accessible the EMBL history, heritage and institutional memory.

The EMBL archives and records management team provides coordinated services to the whole records lifecycle across EMBL with a scope of both administrative and institutional documents as well as scientific records and materials.

We are looking for a motivated student who is interested in gaining experience in archive and records management processes and in a stimulating international environment.

In this role, you will deal with the processing, arrangement and description, and preservation of archival collections in both digital and paper format.

Furthermore, you will be involved in communication and outreach activities for promoting the archival collections.

Your role


As working student in the Archive and Records Management team, you will have the opportunity to learn about procedures in the archive and records management of a leading international research organisation.

You will be involved in the main tasks below:

  • Arranging and describing archival collections, with a focus on archival collections of high priority,
  • Appraisal and selection of documents with potential archival value
  • Support in preparing material for EMBL ́ ́ s 50th anniversary
  • Cataloguing of archival collections

Closing date: 21 May 2023

Contract duration: 6 month

Grading: 520 EUR monthly (Mini job basis)

This is a six month contract that can be renewed for up to another 6 months, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
