The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN) is a member of the Leibniz Association and is based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

SGN conducts natural history research with more than 800 employees and research institutions in seven federal states. The Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) explores the interactions between biodiversity, climate, and society.

Scientific Programmer (M/F/d)

(100% full-time position / part time solutions available)

BIOfid provides access to current and historical biodiversity literature.

It is a collaboration between SGN, the University Library Johann Christian Senckenberg at Goethe University, and the working group Computational Humanities/Text Technology at Goethe University.

Since the start of the pilot project on data mobilization from historical Central European biodiversity literature in German language, we have gradually expanded our service at the organismic (vascular plants, birds, moths and butterflies, soil invertebrates) and technological level (Text Mining Pipeline and Semantic Search Engine).

The developed tools should be re-usable to permit processing of further text corpora with other organism groups and/or other geographic regions in the future.


Your tasks

  • Designing and implementing a Natural Language Processing (NLP) service for biodiversity literature
  • Create Continuous Integration (CI) pipelines for automating release processes
  • Work closely together with other developers, data scientists and biologists to innovate and customize BIOfidtools for the target group
  • Optimize workflows for data compilation and structuring
  • Writing scientific papers on projectrelated scientific software and data pipelines
  • Contribute to scientific papers on use cases
  • Carry out scientific data analyses for use cases

Your profile

  • Master Degree in Informatics, Biodiversity Informatics, Bioinformatics, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience with web Python frameworks (e.g FastAPI, Flask, Django)
  • Software Engineering / Software Testing (e.g. with pytest)
  • Experience with microservice infrastructure (e.g. Docker)

Ideal are also

  • SCRUM Experience
  • CIpipelines e.g. GitHub Actions
  • Knowledge of the UIMA-XML format
  • Experience with User Interface Design (UX/UI)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; German language skills are an advantage
  • High willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team

Place of employment:

Working hours:
full-time position (40 weekly working hours / part time options are available)

Type of contract:
the contract is to start as soon as possible and is inititally limited to a 18-month fixed-term contract


Salary:
according to the collective agreement of the State of Hesse (pay grade E 13, TV-H / TV-L)
