Thesis title:

DFACS Control and Pointing Performance of LISA Constellation

The AOCS/GNC & Flight Dynamics department is in charge of control engineering of all kinds of spacecraft. This includes all aspects such as modeling, design/synthesis and verification & validation of the AOCS/GNC system.

LISA is the first space mission to establish the new field of gravitational wave astronomy, observing highly energetic events within the entire event horizon of the universe.

As the instrument is distributed over a constellation of three spacecraft with ultra-high relative measurement precision needs, LISA is among the most ambitions missions ever flown.

Several research studies as well as the very successful precursor mission LISA Pathfinder have pushed this observatory into the range of today's technical capabilities.

One of the main challenges for spaceborne gravitational wave detection is to ensure free fall of the test masses in dedicated degrees of freedom by shielding them from external disturbances and to minimize any non-gravitational impact in the frequency band of interest.

In LISA, this objective is carried out by the drag-free and attitude control system (DFACS).

After constellation acquisition, where the bidirectional laser links between the telescopes of the three satellites have been established, DFACS is in science operation with drag-free control applied along the sensitive axis which is the line of sight of each telescope.

Both attitude control of the satellites and the telescopes are locked onto the optical signals from the long arm interferometer where the Optical Assembly Tracking Mechanism (OATM) is in charge of the telescope movement.

Based on the experience and results gained during the different phases of the LISA mission the main objective of the master thesis is the control and actuation strategy of the OATM during different DFACS modes (e.g. acquisition and science operation).

Your location:

At the Airbus site in Friedrichshafen you will be working on innovation where others spend their holidays. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Constance while having lunch in our canteen. And after work, join one of our many corporate sports groups to go running, sailing or skiing.

Your benefits:

  • Attractive salary and worklife balance with an 35hour week (flexitime).
  • Mobile working after agreement with the department.
  • International environment with the opportunity to network globally.
  • Work with modern/diversified technologies.
  • At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.
  • Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Understanding of current strategy and algorithms with respect to telescope control including OATM
  • Familiarization with OATM modeling, revision and understanding of baseline implementation and its limitations
  • Enhancement/development of algorithms for telescope control depending on chosen actuation strategy
  • Enhancement of OATM modeling and implementation into E2E simulation environment
  • Analysis of achievable pointing performance in different DFACS modes depending on revised algorithms and improved modeling for telescope control with OATM
  • Documentation of work

Desired skills and qualifications:

  • Enrolled full time master student (d/f/m) within Aerospace Engineering or Cybernetics or similar field of study
  • Very good knowledge of MATLAB / Simulink
  • Very good knowledge in control engineering and spacecraft dynamics
  • Languages: fluent in English (German is an asset)
