Leading many of our downstream Partnerships, the
Principal Advisor, Market Development (Europe) is a fast paced, highly strategic, Commercial role in the Global Metals and Minerals team.

This role is responsible for leading the execution of our medium to long term Commercial strategy and maximizing value for Rio Tinto across many of our materials, including battery materials and critical minerals.

Sitting at the forefront of strategy development and execution, this role actively leads strategic partnerships with key downstream partners across global value chains.


  • Lead the identification, development, and Commercial relationships with strategic European Partners to create new business opportunities, enhanced proximity, and value in downstream markets with endusers for Rio Tinto.
  • Play a pivotal role in the formulation of the Metals and Minerals strategy, including definition of product and service portfolios, distribution methods, attractiveness of markets and customer segments, customer value propositions and brand management activities.
  • Lead strategic, customerfacing new business development initiatives with Senior members of our Partners' Global Procurement, Strategy, Sustainability and Business Development teams.
  • Lead engagement strategy development for multiple product offerings including Aluminum, Copper, Battery Materials and, Critical Minerals from initial Partner contact (inbound or outbound) through to Key Account creation and subsequent management.
  • Serve as European enduse market expert, providing insights and business opportunities to the broader Commercial business and relevant stakeholders
  • Create wellarticulated frameworks for developing new business strategic partnerships that are global, multicommodity focussed, scaleable, and replicable for multiple enduse verticals.
  • Lead strategy forums to ensure the Commercial and Metals and Minerals gotomarket strategies are executed for optimal generation of near
- and long-term value across multiple commodities.

  • Monitor multicommodity market change dynamics that could impact demand for Rio Tinto products and develop keen Commercial insights to build robust enduse market strategies.
  • Grow Commercial revenues by actioning industry insights and developing compelling Partner offers that deliver longterm value.
  • Have a strong fundamental understanding of various ESG topics across products and understand how to articulate complex, datadriven Sustainability agendas to action for Rio Tinto and Partners' benefits.
  • Translate the enduse, product strategy and product cost positions into the development of price and contract positions, contract summaries, and future customer negotiation mandates

What you'll bring

  • College/University Education
  • Qualifications in Business, Marketing, Commerce, Finance, or related discipline
  • Minimum 10 years Commercial experience, preferably in Marketing, Sales, Strategy or Business Development
  • An entrepreneurial drive, with ability to deconstruct and solve complex problems, investigate drivers, and figure out why things happen
  • Ability to lead multiple stakeholders (both internally and externally) through largescale, complex deal structures to recognize traditional and advanced sources of value
  • Curiosity, Commercial creativity, and the ability to action conceptual thought
  • Strong working knowledge of European OEM markets and supply chains
  • Strong working knowledge of European ESG practices, direction and trends
  • Identify future trends, develop, and lead execution of strategies to access breakthrough Commercial models that drive value
  • Ability to quickly grasp fundamentals of new concepts and create compelling value propositions
