Doctoral Researcher in Development Economics and/or Health Economics (f/m/diverse)
Part time 70% (27.3 hours/week)

The position is to be filled from
01 May 2023 for the duration of 3 years. A contract extension may be possible.

The doctoral researcher is a member of the project "Gender inequality, child labor, and schooling: Evidence on social policies to mitigate the impact of economic shocks" which is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and implemented jointly with the Institute of Health Economics (IHE) of the Leibniz University Hannover (Prof.

Dr. Reichert).

The project aims at measuring the causal effects of various social policies in order to mitigate the implications of economic shocks and the extent to which they affect gender disparities in child labor, education, and health in low-income countries.

It also aims to advance the understanding of the underlying mechanisms and sources of gender inequality.

The generated knowledge is critical for the design of future gender-sensitive social policy interventions in low-income countries and of high relevance for policy makers.

The researcher will conduct field research and have research stays at the University of Ghana and University of Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.

Activities are embedded in IDOS' long-standing work on social policies, poverty, and inequality.

The position is aimed at doctoral students who seek to combine the acquisition of professional experience with the completion of a dissertation in development economics or health economics.

The doctorate will be conducted as part of the project and in close cooperation with Dr. C. Strupat and Prof Dr. A. Reichert.

Qualifications and requirements:

A completed academic university degree (Diplom/Master's degree) in economics with excellent grades

(a focus on development economics, health economics or gender economics is an asset).

Knowledge of statistical software (e.g., STATA, R, Python).
Experience with policy advice and research/work experience in subSaharan Africa are additional assets.
Effective interpersonal and intercultural communication skills including ability to work in a team.
Very good written and spoken English skills. Good command of German is an asset.
Willingness and aptness to travel abroad, including countries with a tropical climate ("Tropentauglichkeit").
