The group of Prof. Lemmermann is looking for a motivated PhD student for a project in viral immunology. The group's work focuses on Cytomegaloviruses (CMV), a herpesvirus that can induce severe complications in immunosuppressed patients.

In the immune competent host, the immune responses and the viral immune evasion are balanced, permitting lifelong viral latency without causing diseases.

CMVs infect a wide variety of cells, including Mast cells.

Mast cells are cells located in mucosal tissues and are known as mediator of allergic reactions, however they also can induce immune responses, e.g.

against viruses. In previous work, we investigated the role of Mast cells in the acute CMV infection (Ebert et al. PloS Pathog Further, we identified a viral protein that induces the degranulation of Mast cells upon CMV infection (Schmiedeke et al.
