The Professorship of Climate Change and Development of the Faculty of Management and Economics in cooperation with RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research are looking for a


PhD Student (m,f,x) for 3 years with 50% (19,9150 hours per week) at RUB and 50% at RWI (TV-L E13):
The new research project "

The Senegal Migration Panel:

Understanding Mobility in a Climate-Stressed Population," funded by Leibniz Gemeinschaft, will investigate micro-level migration decisions in the face of climate change in Senegal.

At the core of the project is the collection and econometric analysis of a multi-year panel survey of village chiefs, households, and individuals in rural communities in Senegal alongside Randomized Controlled Trials and complementary qualitative interviews.

We will analyse how extreme weather events and perceptions of climate change amid high dependence on rain-fed agriculture and pastoralism affect individual migration intentions and behaviour, and how migration compares to other adaptation strategies.

***:

  • Conducting frequent travels to Senegal for data collection, field work, implementation of randomized interventions and other project activities.
  • Assuming a leading role in the project team consisting of researchers from RWI
  • Leibniz Institute for Economic Research, Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), University Potsdam, Université Gaston Berger, California Institute of Technology, and Columbia University.
  • Contributing to a metareplication project to study the replicability of empirical findings in economics.
  • Contributing to teaching in the field of applied development economics and support the Professorship with administrative tasks.

Your profile:
  • Excellent Master's degree in economics, development economics, agricultural economics, or development studies;
  • Strong interest in development economics and climate, development, and migration policies; interest in research transparency and metascience is an asset;
  • Deep understanding of applied econometrics; prior experience with analyzing household survey data with Stata is an asset;
  • International work experience, or be willing to acquire it;
  • Excellent command of and strong writing skills in English; good command of spoken French would be an advantage. Knowledge of German is not required, but desirable;
  • Willingness to teach at Ruhr University Bochum.

The opportunity to work on a doctoral dissertation (PhD thesis) is given.


Due to the financing of the position - 50% by RUB and 50% by RWI - it is planned to establish two employment relationships, each with half of the regular weekly working hours (combined full-time).

The place of work is Bochum as well as Essen.

The load of teaching will be calculated according to - 3 of Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung (state of North Rhine-Westphalia).
