The Hertie School in Berlin prepares exceptional students for leadership positions in government, business, and civil society.

The school offers master's programmes, executive education and doctoral programmes, distinguished by interdisciplinary and practice-oriented teaching, as well as outstanding research.

Its extensive international network positions it as an ambassador of good governance, characterised by public debate and engagement. The school was founded in 2003 by the Hertie Foundation, which remains its major funder. The Hertie School is accredited by the state and the German Science Council.

We seek to fill the following position:

Associate - Research Ethics and Integrity (gn)
part-time (20 hours per week).

The contract shall commence as of ideally 01 October 2023.


Your tasks:


You will support the team of the Dean of Research & Faculty and will also work closely with members of the Hertie School Faculty, Postdoctoral and PhD Researchers.


  • Coordinate and support the Research Ethics Committee
  • Assist Faculty, PhD researchers and postdocs with ethical issues and implications of their research
  • Design, disseminate and promote policies, guidelines, and training materials on research ethics
  • Deliver training courses on research ethics for all Hertie School members, including PhD researchers
  • Advise on practical questions and ethical considerations in research data management
  • Work closely with Library to guarantee compliance with the research data management policy
  • Develop documents to provide guidance and to support the ethical review of research and the management of research data
  • Coordinate with Library, IT, Legal, Centres and Labs on research ethics, data protection and data privacy related questions
  • Participate in meetings with the CIVICA network related to research ethics and integrity, open access and data management

Your profile:

Core requirements:

  • LLM or MA university degree, ideally in Law or the Social Sciences
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills such as planning, coordination, and communication
  • Purposedriven, selfstarting, and detailoriented team player
  • Excellent written and oral command of English

Desirable qualifications:

  • PhD in a field relevant for the topics on which our faculty focus
  • Work experience in an international context, ideally an academic or nonprofit environment
  • German language skills are an asset
  • Familiarity with/willingness to receive training in the field of General Data Protection Regulation and experience with data privacy and data protection issues in research ethics
