We are looking for a:


Rights Assistant in the Rights & Foreign Rights Department

(start 1 August 2023, full time, 38.5 hours/week)

Your responsibilities:

In this role, you will be responsible for a range of duties, assisting the foreign rights team with the preparation and completion of various tasks to the highest standard, including:

  • translating for and curating our English foreign rights homepage, which includes ensuring all information is up to date, creating news items, adding frontlist and backlist titles and keeping an overview of incoming material that could be used in our online presence. Creative thinking is key here
- drafting newsletters, pitches and further presentation material, such as exposés. You will have a lot of creative freedom but must be able to understand, appreciate and work within our style guides.
- assisting the Rights Director with reviewing, renegotiating and processing acquisitions contracts in English. This requires the utmost attention to detail, sure instincts and the ability to nurture and create fruitful business relationships with our partners.
- negotiating and processing renewal agreements and prolongations, where you will need to be able to grasp the rights situation of a specific title comprehensively in all its aspects and keep the long-term goals of the publishing house in mind.
- conducting research into author's agreements and licence contracts in order to create an overview on specific authors and individual works as the basis for further (translation) rights sales
- carrying out other administrative tasks as required.


About you:

We are looking for someone who has confidence in dealing with a range of different areas of work. You will be a motivated, reliable, highly organized and both people
- have native-speaker competence in the English language with a good enough command of German to understand and read internal communication and to get an idea of the books we publish,
- have some experience in the publishing sector, possibly in a rights department or agency,
- have a basic knowledge of intellectual property law and copyright law,
- have exceptional attention to detail and accuracy,
- possess a high level of computer literacy and familiarity with the MS Office suite,
- have great time management skills and be able to prioritize their workload according to deadlines,
- be entitled to live and work in Germany.

Remuneration for this position shall be in accordance with pay scale group IV of the collective wage agreement for employees in the manufacturing and distributing book trade in the state of Berlin.

The position is initially limited to two years, but longer employment is envisaged.
