Beschreibung

The Competence Center for Cultural Heritage Digitization at Fraunhofer IGD develops and automates 3D scanning technologies using photogrammetry, structured light, laser and robotics.

These technologies allow efficient 3D reconstruction of cultural heritage and industry objects. Multiple criteria must be evaluated to construct precise 3D models in reproducible and standardized quality. These evaluations can take a lot of time and can be accelerated using machine learning.

What you will do

The main task is to develop and train different methods to optimize and speed up intermediate reconstructed 3D models that are used during scanning.

Different kinds of datasets must be generated for training and evaluation by using tools e.g. Blender. These machine learning methods must be modified for computations on a GPU cluster. Finally, there are hands-on tests with the corresponding 3D scanner.

In addition, stable metrics that provide sufficient information about the quality of the reconstructed 3D model should be developed.

The goal is to use these metrics already during the scanning process as preliminary information to predict better scanning positions.

This will implicitly lead to an increase in the overall accuracy of the final, reconstructed 3D model, and thus improve the performance of the entire scanning system.

What you bring to the table

  • Good C++ programming skills
  • Knowledge in Python, MatLab/Octave, Blender is advantageous
  • Proficient English skills
  • Precise, responsible, independent worker
  • Analytical skills
  • Experience in statistics/stochastics and linear/nonlinear optimization
  • Experience in machine learning (CNN, 3DCNN, GAN, 3DGAN)

What you can expect

We offer an introduction into our processing workflows, which generate high quality 3D models from acquired data, plus hands-on experience with state-of-the-art 3D digitization technologies.

After an initial state-of-the-art research followed by a practical implementation phase this topic can be extended to a B.Sc. or M.Sc. Thesis.

The weekly working time is 10-20 hours.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process.

As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
