A major key to success in facing climate change and creating more resilient supply chains is the transformation of feedstocks from fossil resources to renewable raw materials.

Led by the Hamburg University of Technology, the CRC 1615 is developing processes and reactors that respond flexibly to the fluctuating properties of renewable raw materials, thus enabling self-adapting, more resilient process engineering

Project C04:

SMART continuously operated fluidised bed for spray granulation with self-regulating residence time distribution

In project C04 a concept for a continuously operated fluidised bed spray granulation process will be developed based on recurrence CFD (rCFD) simulations and reactor adaptation.

The rCFD simulation framework is obtained by calibration experiments and detailed CFD-DEM simulations of the particle formulation step.

Once the database is created, the simulations will be fed by live process data from inline sensors such as Lagrangian sensor particles.

As they are running faster than real-time, the timely intervention is enabled.

Together with the adaptable residence time distribution by novel flexible vertical weirs, this project delivers important features for SMART reactors.

YOUR TASKS

  • Experimental and numerical investigations of a pilotscale fluidized bed applied for continuously operated spray granulation process with the aim of developing a smart reactor concept
  • Measurement and improvement of particle residence time distributions by installation of 3D printed weirs
  • Creation of an rCFD framework (based on CFD-DEM simulations) of the continuous spray granulation process allowing process simulation faster than realtime
  • Integration of live data from Lagrangian and Eulerian sensors for initialization of the rCFD simulations and calculation of future process states
  • Development of a smart process advice concept with qualitative recommendations for action by comparing rCFD simulation results with target properties of the particles

YOUR PROFILE

  • Very good knowledge in the simulation of gassolid processes, especially in CFD-DEM simulations, is required
  • Very good knowledge in the field of particle technology and especially fluidization technology as well as experience with the rCFD simulation approach is advantageous
  • Independent working style and handson mentality when working on the pilotscale plant
  • Very good knowledge of the German and English language

OUR OFFER

  • We offer you the opportunity for scientific qualification with the goal of a doctoral degree (PhD)
  • Participation in a new, futureoriented and interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Centre
  • Collaboration in an interdisciplinary, highly motivated and committed team
  • Research in an innovative, progressive and industrially very relevant field
  • Participation in national and international conferences
  • Flexible and familyfriendly working conditions, 30 days of vacation per year
  • Special conditions in selected sports and fitness clubs
