The newly established
Chair of Multilingual Computational Linguistics at the
University of Passau has been held by
Professor Johann-Mattis List since its inception
on 1 January 2023. One of the chair's concrete goals for the next five years is to expand
standardisation and publication of cross-linguistic digital data.

As part of this initiative, the following position is available at the chair starting
1 April 2023:

Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant:

This is a three-year fixed-term contract with the possibility of extension by an additional
three years following a positive evaluation.


Requirements for employment as an Assistant Professor:
You have completed your doctoral thesis in the field of computer science, computational
linguistics or general/comparative linguistics and have extensive knowledge of scientific
and web-based programming with Python. Applicants who fulfil the eligibility requirements
for a German _Beamter_ (civil service) career can be hired as a temporary _Akademischer _

  • Rat/Akademische Rätin_ and would then be remunerated at pay grade A13 of the German

Requirements for employment as a Graduate Teaching and Research Assistant:
You have a university master's degree in computer science or computational linguistics
and excellent programming skills, specifically in Python, as well as experience in the
development of open source software projects and in web administration with Linux. This
GTRA position would be remunerated at pay grade E13 of the German public-sector
collective agreement (TV-L E13). While employed by the chair, you will be given the
opportunity to study towards your doctorate.

Job description:


  • Teach courses in the field of multilingual computational linguistics to the extent of
five hours per week during the semester; these courses can be directed at students
or university staff.

  • Conduct research on topics related to the standardisation of crosslinguistic data.
  • Collaborate on the expansion of the programming projects of the chair, especially
in the development of Cross-Linguistic Data Formats and the deployment of

programming issues (organising workshops, training student assistants).


Person specification:


  • Willingness to advise students and staff from the University of Passau as well as
collaborating institutions on programming issues and to hold courses for students

  • Excellent programming skills, particularly in Python, and a willingness to familiarise
yourself with the specific software being developed at our chair.
