  • The research assistant should help to establish an ML interaction lab which enables human participants to interact with machine learning models during decision and learning processes. The central research question is which machine learning models are particularly suitable to support human decisionmaking and learning. The core task for the research assistant is the development of new machine learning methods and models which are suitable for interaction with humans and to conduct first studies to evaluate these methods with human participants. For the purpose of such studies, the research assistant should also engage with sensors (cameras, microphones, eye trackers, clickstream data) which are suitable to analyze interaction data in a detailed fashion, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
  • Your Tasks
- development of new machine learning methods and models which are explainable and interpretable, and are suitable for interaction with human users (30 %)
- conducting and analysing evaluation studies on these methods and models with human participants (30 %)
- maintaining cameras, microphones, eye trackers and clickstreams within the lab and analyzing the resulting sensor data (10 %)
- scientific publication and communication of research results (10 %)
- support in teaching (20 %)

The position is intended for PhD studies.

  • Your Profile
We expect
- scientific university degree (Master or comparable) in computer sicence or a computer science-related course of sudy
- programming knowledge (especially Python)
- advanced knowledge in machine learning
- basic knowledge regarding empirical user studies
- very good command of English (both oral and written)
- independent, self-reliant and dedicated style of work
- strong organizational and coordination skills
- ability to cooperate and to work in a team

  • Preferred experience and skills
- ability to quickly grasp new topics and methods
- prior experience with conducting user studies
- prior experience with gathering and analyzing sensor data (cameras, microphones, eye-trackers, click-streams)
- knowledge regarding explainability and interpretability methods in machine learning
- knowledge regarding educational data mining, intelligent tutoring systems, or learning analytics
- prior experience with scientific publishing and communication
- prior experience in teaching
- prior experience in science communication
- interest in interdisciplinary research and collaboration
- knowledge of the German language
