In order to support the AOCS/GNC & Flight Dynamics department, Airbus Defence and Space is looking for a

Master student in the field of AOCS/GNC & Flight Dynamics (d/f/m), title of thesis Development and Implementation of a Consistent Solution Based Fusion Approach for POD and PBD:

  • Location: Friedrichshafen
  • Start:
  • Duration: 6 months

Department:

The AOCS, GNC & Flight Dynamics department is the center of competence in Airbus for attitude and orbit control systems (AOCS), Guidance/Navigation/Control (GNC), flight dynamics, and control engineering for all kinds of spacecraft.

This includes among others modeling, design, synthesis, and verification & validation of the AOCS/GNC systems.

As a master student you will learn about GNSS-navigation in post-processing and optimal estimation techniques such as Kalman filtering while being part of a transnational team working on space missions.

Thesis Topic:

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based position, velocity and time (PVT) estimation is a key function for post processing of all Earth observation missions.

The navigation algorithm for PVT estimation typically processes the raw GNSS measurements such as pseudo-range, carrier phase and/or Doppler frequency in an adequate estimator or filter by fusing them with a dedicated dynamic model.

Precise Orbit Determination (POD) and Precise Baseline Determination (PBD) are the state-of-the-art algorithms to achieve utmost precision in absolute and relative PVT.

POD and PBD are usually obtained independently.

However, for formation flying missions, it is expected that the accuracy and precision of multiple single POD solutions can be improved when combined with the respective PBD solutions.

In practice, the challenge is to analyze and properly treat the known and unknown correlations between the different solutions by using a consistent stochastic model.

Your location:

At the Airbus site in Friedrichshafen you will be working on innovation where others spend their holidays. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Constance while having lunch in our canteen. And after work, join one of our many corporate sports groups to go running, sailing or skiing.

Your benefits:

  • Attractive salary and worklife balance with a 35hour week (flexitime).
  • International environment with the opportunity to network globally.
  • Work with modern/diversified technologies.
  • At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.
  • Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Understand the stateoftheart GNSS navigation filter algorithms and their implementation within the inhouse software PODCAST (C++)
  • Get familiar with the existing toolchain to generate testscenarios and testdata
  • Develop statistical approaches to combine multiple POD and PBD solutions while respecting their correlations
  • Implement and validate a selected set of the approaches in form of a navigation filter in C++ or MATLAB.
For validation we propose a three-step-approach: (1) Software in the loop (SIL), (2) Hardware in the loop (HIL) utilizing a real space GNSS receiver, (3) in-orbit data

  • Compare the solution of the navigation filter to the initial POD and PBD solutions using dedicated test scenarios (e.g. satellite orbital maneuvers) and draw conclusions
  • Documentation

Desired skills and qualifications:

  • Enrolled full time master student (d/f/m) as Aerospace Engineering, Geodesy, or Cybernetics or similar field of study
  • Very good knowledge of estimation theory and GNSS navigation incl. Kalman filtering
  • Practical experience in object oriented C++
  • Practical experience with CI/CD (version control, unit tests, etc.)
  • Experience with geodetic control networks
  • Good knowledge of MATLAB
  • English fluent
  • German would be an asset
  • You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently.

Please upload the following documents:
cover letter, CV, relevant transcripts, enrollment certificate.
