The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government.

AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.


  • PhD student (M/F/d) Project Coral Chronobiology

Background

Tasks

You will conduct experiments to discover the molecular bases responsible for light sensing and organismal interpretation in the coral animal.

Responsibilities include organizing and conducting experiments on cultured and field-collected corals under different light regimes, using physiological (growth, reproduction), as well as molecular diagnostics (RNASeq, HCR in situ stainings) as read outs.

The work will also include attempts of functional molecular interference (Cas9/Crispr).


Requirements:


  • A master's degree (equivalent to a Diplom) in marine biology or molecular ecology or related fields
  • Experience with aquarium experiments on corals and SCUBA certification
  • You will be proficient in using molecular and bioinformatic tools to produce and analyze gene expression and genomic data
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential as well as demonstrated ability to work in a team
  • Disposition to work in laboratory and field conditions.
  • You must be able to begin work on 1 Sep 2023
