Beschreibung

The Max-Planck-Institut for Sustainable Materials (MPI SusMat) focuses on understanding and designing materials at atomic and larger scales through basic research on structural and functional materials, primarily metallic alloys.

The project seeks a PhD candidate for the Recovery of valuable metals from industrial side streams through hydrogen plasma smelting reduction, addressing the challenge of decarbonizing iron and steelmaking processes.

The research aims to utilize industrial byproducts for iron production and implement sustainable extraction techniques to recover iron and other valuable metals present in the waste streams.

Your tasks:

  • Manage and coordinate collaboration between MPI SusMat and CNRS, including evaluation of measurements.
  • Prepare specimens and perform microstructural investigations using various electron microscopes.
  • Conduct microstructural and microchemical characterization using advanced techniques.
  • Measure optical emission spectroscopy for understanding chemical transformations.
  • Interpret results from a materials physics perspective and discuss process optimizations.
  • Share scientific results through publications and presentations.
  • Engage in regular meetings and collaboration with CNRS counterparts.

Your profile:

We seek a materials scientist/engineer, metallurgist, or chemist with expertise in phase transformations and thermodynamics. Experience with SEM and thermodynamic calculations is beneficial.

Proficiency in English is required due to the international environment at MPI SusMat.

What we offer:

Salary: The position is based on TVöD 13, dependent on qualifications.

The Max Planck Institute for Iron Research GmbH encourages applications from individuals with disabilities and minorities, promoting diversity in the workplace.
