Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Specific Duties


The KISS project is a national consortium of ten research centres in Germany, led by the Universität Hamburg and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The main goal of this project is the development of machine learning methods for the resource-efficient simulation of complex scientific datasets in particle physics, astroparticle physics, hadron
- and nuclear physics, and astronomy.

Possible topics include:
- development of generative models for the simulation of astronomical sky surveys in various wave bands
- development of generative models for the simulation of particle showers in complex detectors
- study of the precision and uncertainties of generative networks in particle physics


Postdoctoral research associates will conduct cutting-edge research and duties include the development of algorithms, the writing of scientific publications and the presentation at international conferences.

They will be embedded in a highly international and interdisciplinary research environment that includes the Department of Physics, DESY, The Centre for Data and Computing in the Natural Sciences (CDCS), and the Cluster of Excellence "Quantum Universe".

The University hosts one of the biggest physics departments in the country and provides state-of-the-art computing infrastructure. Research associates will have access to fund for travel and may participate in teaching at the University.


Requirements:

A university degree in a relevant field plus doctorate.

Doctoral degree in physics or another relevant field (mathematics, computer science). Familiarity with basics of astrophysics and particle physics, ideally in the form of an undergraduate thesis project. Experience in coding and in the basics of machine learning.
