The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, in cooperation with the German Centre for Integrative

Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig, offers the following position until 31 December 2023

with possibility of renewal, starting as soon as possible:

Lead Scientific Officer for the European Topic Center on Biodiversity and

Ecosystems (ETC-BE) (M/F/d)
as half-time employment (50%)_. _

The salary will be up to Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L if the personal requirements and tasks are fulfilled. This

position will be based at iDiv in Leipzig within the Biodiversity Conservation research group.

The
German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig is a National

Research Centre funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Its central mission is to promote

theory-driven synthesis and data-driven theory in integrative biodiversity research. It is located in the

city of Leipzig and it is a central institution of the Leipzig University, jointly hosted by the Martin Luther

University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Helmholtz Centre for

biodiversity change, with the goal of informing environmental policy and management of ecosystems.

This position is funded by the
European Environment Agency (EEA) European Topic Centre on

Biodiversity and Ecosystems Program (ETC-BE).
ETC-BE aims to support the EEA with

updated information on biodiversity and ecosystems, mostly through co-creation, and thus support

the EEA with the next generation of thematic and integrated biodiversity and ecosystem assessments

as well as identification of actionable nature-based solutions. Thereby, the joint work of the EEA and

ETC BE will support the implementation of the Green Deal. The job will be performed in collaboration

with a large consortium of partner institutions and organizations across Europe.

The objective of the position of Lead Scientific Coordinator, is to broker the scientific partnerships of

the ETC-BE, to provide scientific leadership and coordination to various research tasks within ETC-BE,

to guarantee that the outputs are of the highest scientific standard, but also to ensure there is cross
- cutting coordination between the different tasks of MLU's responsibility. This position will be a part of

a wider ETC-BE-iDiv Scientific team, and the post holders will be required to promote and maintain a

transversal view of related tasks.


Tasks:


  • Scientific analysis and supervision of species and habitats taxonomy relevant for monitoring the
Habitats Directive, Water Framework Directive and the Nature Restoration Law

  • Develop and implement a scientific framework to support the implementation and monitoring of
EU nature-related regulations and policies

  • Participation in meetings with the EEA and the EU commission providing scientific advice
  • Establish research priorities and define analytical strategies that maximize the efficiency across the
different Action Plans of the ETC-BE in which MLU / iDiv is involved

  • Oversee daytoday scientificrelated activities of ETC-BE Tasks in which MLUiDiv is involved
including providing leadership, guidance and support to shape and harmonize workplans across

different Scientific Task

  • Incorporate relevant scientific outputs of Horizon and other research projects in the activities of
ETC-BE

  • Facilitate the synergies and links between the ETC-BE consortium and the management and
development of ETC-BE tasks at MLU-iDiv

  • Evaluate and update scientific data standards, methods, tools, guidelines, and knowledge
products to identify and fill information gaps and potential new data streams, including the

repurpose and recover of information from other scientific projects

  • Lead the development of future ETC-BE Strategic Plans
  • Supervise PhD students and researchers in the Biodiversity Conservation L
