Institution:

Lehrstuhl und Institut für Kristallographie

Our Profile:

We are seeking for a postdoctoral scientist (second instrument scientist) (f/m/non-binary) for the scientific co-supervision of the polarized neutron single crystal diffractometer POLI at the Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz-Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching near Munich.

POLI is operated jointly by the Institute of Crystallography at RWTH Aachen University and the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS).

It is among the most state-of-the-art and versatile scientific neutron instruments worldwide using hot polarized neutrons from one of the world's most powerful neutron sources (FRM II).

It attracts a diverse science community from all over the world, spanning physical, chemical, and materials sciences, in performing detailed analyses of magnetic and crystal structures.

Further, we support you in your work with:

  • Excellent scientific and technical infrastructure and international interdisciplinary working environment on an attractive campus, Garching Research Centre near Munich, including many cooperation opportunities with other universities and institutions nearby.
  • Opportunity to meet and work with excellent scientists from all over the world and to learn and contribute to their various frontier research with neutrons.
  • Possibility of home office and familyfriendly company policy.
  • Further development of your personal strengths, e.g., through an extensive range of training courses provided by the RWTH Postdoc Academy and Technical University of Munich.

Your Profile:

  • A Ph.
D. degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field.

  • Experiences in using neutron scattering to study magnetism, superconductivity, multiferroics or a related topic.
  • Strong interest in instrumental development.
  • Strong record of research demonstrated by publications in peerreviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Programming experiences in, e.g. Python, C or C++.
  • Excellent English and communication skills because of the international working environment.

Other requirements:

  • Readiness to be present outside regular office hours because the neutron source and instruments operate on a 24h/7d basis.

Your Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Joint responsibility with the first instrument scientist for the operation of POLI. As a local contact, you schedule user experiments and support them to perform safe and efficient experiments with excellent scientific results.
  • Pursue your own research projects related to magnetism using neutron scattering and publish results in scientific journals, taking advantage of various laboratories in the Institute of Crystallography in Aachen, at JCNS in Jülich and at MLZ in Garching.
  • Pursue developments in instrumentation, sample environments and software to maintain and continuously raise the instrument's performance in order to expand the user base. Current examples are our 2D area detector and insitu SEOP neutron polarizer and analyser activities. You will work together with highly motivated scientists and technicians from different working groups like the central groups for sample environment and detector development from the related facilities.
  • Represent the instruments operated by RWTH Aachen University and JCNS at scientific conferences and workshops, and participate in workshops and schools to educate users and students.

What We Offer:

The position is to be filled by 9/1/2023 and offered for a fixed term for three years.

The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).

This is a full-time position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.
