About the team/job


EMBL is Europe's life sciences laboratory - an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology.

It operates across six sites in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Cambridge, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome.

Our mission is to perform basic research in molecular biology; train scientists, students and visitors at all levels; offer vital services to scientists in the public and private sectors within the member states; develop new instruments and methods; and engage actively in technology transfer.


We are looking for a creative communicator looking to gain experience across a range of external communications with a focus on social media and multimedia content creation.


You will be based at the EMBL headquarters in Heidelberg, working closely with the EMBL Communications Department located at all six EMBL sites, and colleagues across the entire organisation.

You will create written and multimedia content to be used across a variety of channels, with a focus on social media.

You will also gain insight into social media monitoring, assist with written and video interviews, and writing longer form content.


We are an international, friendly and supportive team, with ties to scientists and professionals throughout European and global life sciences and supportive technologies.


Your role
Supporting EMBL's social media presence; specifically monitoring, creating, and posting content for EMBL channels on X,
- , and

  • Researching and developing written and visual content for external and internal communications, such as news articles, interviews, internal announcements
  • Editing and fact checking documents and texts
  • Providing social media analytics
  • Creating graphics from templates and uploading digital content

You have

  • A bachelor or higher degree in (science) communications, journalism or a relevant scientific discipline
  • Excellent English writing and communication skills
  • The ability to extract key messages from materials and articulate them in engaging ways
  • Experience in using social media
  • Experience in video creation and editing
  • Flexibility in working in a team and keeping track of multiple deadlines
  • An interest in the life sciences is essential

You might also have

  • First experience in the communications field
  • Knowledge of other European languages, especially German
