With more than 80 employees, the Chair for Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems and the Institute for Power Generation and Storage Systems are among the largest university research institutions for battery storage systems in Europe.

We are continuously looking for motivated and highly qualified support to advance the energy transition.

We deal with all issues arising from the planning and operation of battery storage systems, electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.

These range from system design and the development of operating strategies to profitability calculations and policy advice on all the latest battery-related topics.

We operate our own fleet of electric vehicles, support the power grid with a large-scale battery storage system, plan the decarbonisation of industrial operations or advise political ministries on strategic decisions that affect our society.

Your Profile:


Your must-haves:

  • You are interested in familiarizing yourself with the technical issues of electric vehicles
  • You have an independent, reliable and careful way of working and are always interested in learning something new
  • You are familiar with programming (Python, possibly also Matlab) and are able to develop code independently
  • You have good German and English skills

What would be nice to have:

  • You already have knowledge in optimization tasks and algorithms

Your Duties and Responsibilities:


Background of the task:


The electrification of transport and the decarbonisation of the automotive industry through renewable energies are an important component of global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Due to policy mandates and economic incentives, the number of newly registered battery electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing rapidly. Despite falling battery costs, new electric vehicles are generally more expensive than conventional vehicles in the same class. However, bi-directional charging offers electric vehicles the opportunity to generate additional revenue and improve profitability. Here, the EV battery is either used for self-consumption during its service life or offered on energy markets.

In this way, the battery can serve as a buffer for the fluctuating power generation of a PV system or form an EV pool and support the power grid by stabilising frequency and voltage.

Owners can also trade on the spot market to charge the vehicle when electricity prices are low.

  • Support for model development
  • Data collection and management
  • Processing and visualization of the results

What We Offer:


The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of initially three months.

It is possible to extend the contract.
This is a part-time contract position.
The standard weekly hours will be 7 hours.
Up to 19 hours per week are possible.
The salary is based on the RWTH Guidelines for Student and Graduate Assistants.
The position corresponds to a pay grade of 12,00 € per hour.
