The UFZ

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences.

We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association.

Our mission:
Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.

The job

Recent years have shown that Germany, like many other countries, is facing a water crisis.

While new ways to keep water in the landscape are being explored during recent droughts, we need to be prepared for devastating flood events to occur.

This urgently calls for better understanding and prediction of catchment dynamics. New innovative approaches have to be developed, e.g.

by using soft data or the combination of different data types, new process conceptualizations and modelling avenues or the development of new calibration/validation strategies.

We are looking for a motivated young researcher who is interested in developing new concepts for predicting the dynamics of catchments by linking statistical methods and hydrological process understanding.

The Department of Catchment Hydrology is offering the following vacancy starting April, 1, 2023:
Your tasks

  • Developing your own research profile towards the advancement of hydro(geo)logical conceptualization of catchment dynamics and the understanding and prediction of extreme events. A research avenue based on linking statistical methods and process understanding is highly appreciated, but we are also open to other innovative research agendas.
  • To contribute to publications in high quality scientific journals.
  • To attract thirdparty funding and act as a mentor and coach to PhD students.
  • To build and maintain a network with partners from academia
  • To actively participate in the UFZ Integrated Project "Freshwater Resources" and the scientific development of the Department Catchment Hydrology.
We offer

  • Excellent technical facilities which are without parallel
  • Work in interdisciplinary, multinational teams and excellent links with national and international research networks
  • A vibrant region with a high quality of life and a wide cultural offering for a balance between family and professional life
  • Interesting career opportunities and an extensive range of training and further education courses
  • Remuneration up to the TVöD publicsector pay grade 13 including publicsector social security benefits

Profile:

  • Highly motivated scientist who holds a PhD in hydrology, environmental sciences or a closely related field
  • Profound knowledge in statistical analysis of hydrometeorological extremes (runoff, precipitation, water quality, etc.), the analysis of their spatial dependencies and interpretation of hydrological processes.
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary and international environmental research
  • Capabilities to supervise PhD students
  • Capacity for teamwork and excellent communication and programming skills
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential; knowledge in German language is appreciated
