Beschreibung

The Energy Storage Thermodynamic Modeling Working Student will be part of a world-class engineering team focused on enhancing the Malta long duration, pumped heat energy storage technology.

The Working Student will primarily support the Store2REPower Project team but will also work with the Malta Strategic Initiatives team in developing and modeling potential next generation Malta technologies.

Store2REPower is a BMWK funded project where Malta collaborates with the project partners DLR, Alfa Laval, and Siemens Energy.

The project focuses on one hand on component testing and on the other hand on the modeling and analysis of various use and business cases of the Malta energy storage technology to provide electricity and heat in different European markets.

The Working Student should be available to work 10 to 20 hours per week. Working hours can be flexible to promote a good work-study balance and can be adjusted based on university requirements. This position requires working from a home office in Germany and will report to the Application Engineering Manager.

A Malta Working Student role offers a unique opportunity for a motivated student to be part of a new, innovative product development team in an agile and dynamic environment.

The length of the Working Student assignment is flexible with a start date on or before March 4, 2024, with the end date negotiable.

Roles and Responsibilities
Work focus for the Store2REPower Project will include the following:

  • Understand how to run the existing EBSILON professional model of the Malta cycle including the control logic and the different operating modes.
  • Make modifications to the base EBSILON cycle model that incorporate heat and/or cold energy extraction cases identified in market investigations and report results back to the project partners.
  • Work with the DLR EBSILON modeling team to ensure their model results are consistent with predicted Malta model results for various use cases.
  • Estimate cost impacts of cycle modifications.
  • Enhance Malta's hourly Performance Model and run simulations with consideration for alternative use cases for Malta's technology
Additional duties beyond the Store2REPower Project may include the following:

  • Upgrade the EBSILON cycle model focusing on user productivity improvements and customer-friendly features.
  • Participate as a member of the development team in modeling, evaluating, and optimizing cycle alternatives for the next generation Malta technology.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science degree with a focus on thermodynamics from an accredited college or university
  • Good understanding of thermodynamic processes
  • Experience with EBSILON professional or similar cycle simulation software is a plus
  • Software programming capabilities are a plus (Visual Basic, Python, Matlab or similar)

Desired Characteristics

  • Understanding of power generation, renewable energy, and energy storage market dynamics
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience building standard tools and processes to enhance quality and productivity.
  • Able to manage priorities and to meet schedules in challenging environment.
  • Innovative & creative thinker

Benefits

  • This role has tremendous potential learning opportunities.
  • The Working Student will have the flexibility to work remotely.
