The UFZ:

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences.

We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association.

Our mission:
Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.

The job:

The position is set at the interface between assessing earth system processes in the field, improving models and developing and providing data products.

The scientist will supervise the TERENO/ICOS eddy covariance ecosystem research stations Hohes Holz, Am Großen Bruch and Hordorf (partly also ICOS and eLTER stations).

We are looking for a highly motivated and initiative individual to analyse and interprete the ecological and hydrological dynamics of different land use types under changing climatic conditions based on eddy covariance flux and accompanying ecological and biometric data.

Your tasks:

  • Serving as ICOS Station PI for sites Hohes Holz and Am Großen Bruch
  • Provide data streams and process understanding to support monitoring products and modelling tools within UFZ
  • Supervision of field group and technical assistants
  • Analysis of the multiannual time series to enhance insights on climate change impacts on carbon and water footprints
  • Ensure FAIR data handling, within the UFZ and to ICOS carbon portal
- release of near real time data products via UFZ IT-infrastructure

  • Development of new research proposals, publishing in peerreviewed journals

We offer:

  • Excellent technical facilities which are without parallel
  • Work in interdisciplinary, multinational teams and excellent links with national and international research networks
  • A vibrant region with a high quality of life and a wide cultural offering for a balance between family and professional life

  • Remuneration according to TVöD up to pay group 14 (depending on personal requirements) including the social benefits of the public sector

Your profile:

  • Phd in Environmental Science/Atmospheric Physics, meteorology, ecology, hydrology,
  • Profound experience in eddy covariance method with respect to data processing and analysis
  • Experience in scientific interpretation and analysis of observations complementary to eddy covariance data (e.g. isotopes, remote sensing, sapflow)
  • Experience with data acquisition, data transfer and processing of hydrometeorological variables as well as data publication and visualization
  • Programming skills in a modern data science language
  • Proven record of scientific publications in international peerreviewed journals
