Full time 100%, 39 hours/week

Position No. 2023-C-01
The position may be filled as soon as possible and is limited to 31 December 2025. A contract extension may be possible.


The senior researcher will strengthen IDOS' climate governance team by contributing research and policy advice to the Klimalog project funded by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

In its current phase , the project focuses on analysing multilevel climate governance and policies of international cooperation that strive towards a climate-resilient and ecologically sensitive just transformation.


The senior researcher will conceptualize and conduct policy-oriented social science research on strengthening climate governance and climate policies in developing countries and with a focus on cities, urbanization and urban climate governance.

The position is aimed at a senior researcher well-versed in theoretical and methodological social science discourses and with a strong interest in empirical analysis, including through case study research in a developing countries context as well as in policy advice.


Qualifications and requirements:


  • Masters degree and a completed PhD (PhD thesis at least submitted) and very good grades in political science, international relations, human geography, development studies, sociology or related social sciences (PhD thesis at least submitted);
  • Proven research experience in one or several of the following fields: climate change adaptation and/or mitigation policies, multilevel climate governance, urban climate governance, transnational climate policy and subnational climate action;
  • Knowledge of cities as actors, change agents and social spaces, and a critical understanding of climatedevelopment interlinkages at city level, including intersectoral and ruralurban linkages, cobenefits and tradeoffs is an asset;
  • Strong theoretical, conceptual and qualitative methodological skills; additional experiences with quantitative or mixedmethod designs and an ability to source, compile and manage large and diverse datasets are assets;
  • Empirical research or work experience in developing countries and at city level, especially in Africa or Asia, is an asset;
  • Strong interest in translating research into policy advice and outreach at pertinent global, EU and German policy events, prior experiences are an asset;
  • Excellent written and spoken language skills in English; an excellent command of German is a strong asset; a good command of another major international language is an asset;
  • Eagerness to work in an interdisciplinary team and good communication skills;
  • Willingness and aptness to travel abroad, including in countries with a tropical climate ("Tropentauglichkeit").
