The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences.

The job:


165 scientific institutions in 28 countries collaborate towards the goal to formalize a pan-European distributed research infrastructure consisting of >250 highly instrumented ecosystem research sites as an European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC), an infrastructure-focused limited liability company with countries as shareholders.

Thereby, multi-layered and highly complex processes are to be handled for the elicitation of the needs of diverse user groups, specification and coordination with the community and between the partner countries.

The results of these processes have to be fed into the negotiations with the funding stakeholders (usually ministries of science).

The activities are mainly carried out in the course of two ongoing Horizon2020 projects, which are coordinated or co-coordinated by the UFZ (eLTER PPP, eLTER PLUS,


We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated person with experience in scientific and technical project management, organizational skills and the readiness for long-term commitment - possibly in the context of the emerging Research Infrastructure as a pan-European enterprise (legal formalization, implementation and long-term operation).


Your tasks:


Support the activities of the eLTER Head Office within UFZ an internationally:

  • Support the eLTER overall coordination in related high-level activities
  • Communication between eLTER Head Office and a wide range of stakeholders (eLTER project consortia, country networks incl. their coordinators)
  • Plan and support the organisation of major virtual and physical meetings (e.g., project consortia)
  • Contribute to grant proposal writing
  • Promote eLTER in relevant conferences, meetings, and networking events
  • Support the creation of information material for different stakeholder groups
  • Contribute to technical reports in the context of the eLTERrelated projects, e.g., to the European Commission

Strategic eLTER ESFRI process:


  • Communication with highlevel representatives from national ministries, science academies and research institutions from all over Europe
  • Managing the eLTER ESFRI process in close cooperation with the eLTER ESFRI coordinator
  • Coordination of biannual (physical and virtual) meetings with national delegations and project stakeholders
  • Preparation of formal meeting materials
  • Leading related Work packages in European eLTER projects (coordination, representation, reporting)

Your profile:


  • Master's degree in natural, social, political sciences (PhD is an asset but not mandatory); experience in natural sciences is an asset but the main focus of work in on highlevel formalization issues and the creation of a panEuropean enterprise in the field of ecosystem and socioecological research
  • Experience in project or science management
  • Good organisational skills
  • Good communication skills in English
  • Experience with MS Office and cloud solutions for collaborative work
  • Experience with grant proposal writing is an asset
  • Motivation to work in an international and interdisciplinary
