In order to support the development of next generation optical instruments for space, Airbus Defence and Space is looking for a

Masters student within the field of Optical Metrology for Space Applications (d/f/m), Optical Formation Metrology Testbed:

  • Location: _Friedrichshafen _
  • Start: _As soon as possible _
  • Duration: _6 Months _

Work context:

In our laboratory for enabling technologies we build up hands-on experience while working on the challenges of the planned Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and Next Generation Gravity Missions (NGGM).

In the context of an end-to-end inter-satellite laser ranging testbed with nanometre accuracy, we offer a position for a master thesis with the objective to develop a system for high-precision motion control and initial laser-link acquisition.

You will learn about optical metrology, phase measurement systems, high-precision motion control, scan patterns, and related challenges concerning their implementation in space.

Your location:

At the Airbus site in Friedrichshafen you will be working on innovation where others spend their holidays. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Constance while having lunch in our canteen. And after work, join one of our many corporate sports groups to go running, sailing or skiing.

Your benefits:

  • Attractive salary and worklife balance with an 35hour week (flexitime).
  • Mobile working after agreement with the department.
  • International environment with the opportunity to network globally.
  • Work with modern/diversified technologies.
  • At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.
  • Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Setup and optimization of an optomechanical experiment including two optical metrology terminals.
  • Motion control via two fast steering mirrors and a hexapod.
  • Planning and execution of laser link acquisition tests (in orbit, the narrow outgoing laser beam needs to scan a wider uncertainty field until the remote spacecraft is able to detect an incoming signal).
  • Tracking of distance variations between the optical terminals once the laser link is established.
  • Data analysis and performance evaluation of experimental results as well as their interpretation.

Desired skills and qualifications:

  • Enrolled fulltime master's student within Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar field of study.
  • Handson experience with optical elements and lab equipment is beneficial.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Matlab and C++ is beneficial.
  • Enthusiasm for new technologies, structured and independent workingattitude combined with excellent technical communication skills are essential for this exciting task.
  • You should be fluent in English.

Please upload the following documents:
cover letter, CV, relevant transcripts, enrollment certificate.
