The position can be filled part-time in principle.


GERICS develops science based prototype products and services in support to government, administration and business in their efforts to adapt to climate change.

It builds up a national and international network structure in order to integrate existing competences and knowledge, and to link various actors within the complex area of climate change.


CLIMABOROUGH is an Innovation action and aims to enhance traditional urban and spatial planning approaches through data and knowledge based decision making (including a possible new role for GIS - Geographic Information Systems), including climate services co-production for transitions, cross-city and cross-country pilot co-creation as well as the tactical use of public procurement of innovative solutions.

The goal is not just to enhance an open set of tools leveraging climate transition in cities, but also to boost the exchange of experimental good practices, experiences and lessons learnt in this field, to help cities meet climate neutrality by 2050.


The position aims to support and co-design climate services to support urban climate transitions, monitoring and evaluating the processes as how climate information and services enter and alter the climate management decision making processes in urban areas.


Your tasks:


  • Analyse city and urban climate adaptation measures and interactions and conflicts with other policy processes designing a climate policy integration and coherence framework.
  • Hold interviews with policymakers and adaptation experts on interventions and urban adaptation.
  • Develop a participatory modelling exercise to design climate services components and test the adaptation measures with users that might emerge from the process.
  • Codesign the necessary components of climate services for urban planning.
  • Create a climateproofing assessment contextualized for urban planning and procurement processes.

Your profile:


  • M.Sc. degree in Geography, Environmental Economics, Urban Studies, or Development Studies.
  • PhD in Social Sciences with experience in the climate context.
  • Experience in participatory processes and stakeholder interaction.
  • Capacity for teamwork in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written).
  • German and other European language skills are desirable.
  • Additionally, we welcome knowledge on working in the urban context already and supporting adaptation processes.
