Bereich- GERICS - Climate Service Center- Standort- Hamburg- Bewerbermanagement- Frau Erika KrügerGERICS develops science based prototype products and services in support to government, administration and business in their efforts to adapt to climate change.

It builds up a national and international network structure in order to integrate existing competences and knowledge, and to link various actors within the complex area of climate change.

The project KliWiSt is a BMWi funded joint research project with Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES).

It's aim is to assess climate change impacts specifically for the procedure of wind energy site assessment, and to synthesize guidelines informing future engineering standard specifications.

The project considers the whole processing chain from practice
- and sector-relevant identification of requirements and research gaps, an extensive analysis of observational data as well as past and future climate projections with a focus on wind climate variability and uncertainty, and the development of methodological approaches to incorporate climate (change) and uncertainty information into conventional industry-procedures. It will be rounded out by demonstrating case studies, and the transfer into guidelines for incorporation into future engineering standard specifications. The project will be supported and informed by industry-partners to develop practice
- and sector-relevant products tailored to industry-requirements.

Equal opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. The position can be filled part-time in principle.

Your tasks:

  • Analysis and synthesize of practice
- and sector relevant climate characteristics and compound climate events specific to wind energy.

  • Development of dedicated climate impact indices for wind energy (such as for strong wind, icing, faunistic migration, etc.).
  • Identification, analysis and synthesize of uncertainty sources with respect to climate model simulations and data processing (such as methodologicaltechnical uncertainty originating from interpolation procedures, power curves etc.).
  • Support the codevelopment of guidance documents for transfer into future engineering standard specifications.
  • Support the communication and collaboration incl. conducting workshops with relevant industrypartners and boards in the frame of the project and beyond.
  • Representation of GERICS and KliWiSt at scientific and societal relevant conferences, workshops and meetings; and compiling scientific and technical publications of the findings in related international peerreviewed research journals.

Your profile:

  • A university degree and PhD in meteorology, physics or other related disciplines in natural sciences and earth science is essential.
  • Excellent knowledge in energy meteorology and/or boundary layer meteorology as well as time series analysis of climate data is desired.
  • Extensive experience in the analysis of climate model ensemble data from regional climate change projections, and from earth observations and measurements is essential.
  • Background knowledge in climate impact assessment and sectoral impacts on wind energy.
  • Experience in user dialogues and communication with actors in the energy sector.
  • Experience in working in international scientific projects and networks such as the EURO-CORDEX initiative would be beneficial.
  • Profound knowledge in appropriate programming languages such as Python, experience with software version control systems such as git, experience with Linux/Unix computer environments.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English, as a synthesis report, stakeholder workshops and user dialogues with German industrypartners will be conducted.
  • A profound record of peer reviewed publications in order to demonstrate the skill to publish the work in scientific journals.
  • Willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team at the Climate Service Center Germany. Interest beyond the pure scientific analysis of data and processes is expected as the focus of our center is on the provision of decision making knowledge.
