A socially just transition of the mobility sector is one of the key targets of the current German government.

The coalition's agreement states that the government plans to use the 2020s to kick off a transition process which enables sustainable, efficient, barrier-free, intelligent, and innovative mobility that is affordable for everyone.

This policy also aligns with the ambition required to decarbonise the transport sector, and supports the government's overall target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.

The ICCT seeks a Fellow to contribute to a research project focusing on an equitable and socially just transition to low
- and zero-emission vehicles. During this 12 month fellowship, based in our office in Berlin, Germany, you will work in close collaboration with transportation experts in a friendly, collaborative, and nonhierarchical environment and will report to an ICCT Senior Researcher.


You Will:

  • Collect and analyze data on the uptake of low
- and zero-emission vehicles in Germany;

  • Analyze global best practice measures to promote the deployment of low
- and zero-emission vehicles with focus on a socially just transition, such as progressive vehicle tax policies and equitable charging infrastructure deployment;

  • Contribute to publications and preparing interviews (in English and German)
  • Help organize workshops and facilitate exchanges with policymakers;
  • Support the development of policy recommendations for a socially just transition to low
- and zero-emission vehicles, and

  • Other duties as assigned.

You Have:


While we will provide all support needed to accomplish these tasks, it is essential that you can work independently, educate yourself in new skills and tools, and generate reliable results.

Furthermore, it is important that you have a distinct research mentality, meaning that you are eager for knowledge, motivated to find underlying connections and excited about entering new territories.


In addition, the following qualifications are required:

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in engineering, environmental science or policy, social science, data science, transportation, or related field;
  • Experience or interest in transportation, equity, climate change, public policy, or related topics;
  • Fluent English communication skills, both written and verbal required, plus reading and writing proficiency or fluency in German;
  • Proficiency with MS Office and ArcGIS; and
  • Organization and collaboration skills, combined with a positive attitude.
Our Benefits


This full-time (40 hours/week), temporary position will be based in ICCT's Berlin office with a duration of 12 months and have a salary of €3,000 (gross) per month.

The position may lead to regular, full-time employment depending on the Fellow's performance.
