Beschreibung
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe.

Our around 1,400 employees work for a sustainable, economical, safe and socially fair energy supply system based on renewable energies.

We contribute to this with our research priorities of energy supply, energy distribution, energy storage and energy use.

Through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, spin-off companies and global cooperation, we shape the sustainable transformation of the energy system.

For our group in the department of "Sustainable Synthesis Products", we are looking for two student assistants with the opportunity to write a bachelor's, master's or diploma thesis as soon as possible.

Would you like to actively help shape the energy transition and write your thesis in this area? With us you will find the experts and the environment to achieve these goals.

Our group at Fraunhofer ISE deals with the conversion of green hydrogen from renewable electricity into liquid energy carriers ("e-fuels") and chemicals.

Sustainable aviation fuels ("SAF") are a particularly important target product in this context, as they can directly replace fossil kerosene and thereby significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation.

The need for very high energy densities and special physical properties places high demands on alternative propulsion technologies or energy sources for aircraft, so that kerosene will continue to be the basis for air travel in the coming decades.

At Fraunhofer ISE, an innovative process is being developed for the production of the SAF, which is to be examined in detail as part of the planned work.

The topic of your thesis is the "Simulative investigation of efficient power-to-jet fuel production" and in particular the optimization and evaluation of energy requirements and process efficiencies.

As part of your work, you will either conduct the reactions kinetic modeling over Matlab software or conduct the process simulation over Aspen Plus software.

What you will do

  • You deepen your knowledge with Matlab and Aspen Plus software.
  • You conduct a literature review related to reaction networks and kinetic models for subprocesses within a powertojet fuel process.
  • You develop a kinetic model for a synthesis subprocess in Matlab.
  • You implement the kinetic model for the synthesis subprocess on Aspen Plus software.
  • You simulate processes for the production of synthetic using Aspen Plus.
  • You work on process integration concepts and heat network development.
  • You prepare presentations on the progress of your work.

What you bring to the table

  • You have basic knowledge in the field of reaction engineering and thermodynamics.
  • Previous knowledge of working on process modeling and simulations is helpful, but not mandatory.
  • Ideally, you are already familiar with Matlab or Aspen Plus.
  • It is important to you to get involved in your team and to achieve goals together in interdisciplinary cooperation.
  • You formulate your ideas in an understandable way and you communicate effectively with other team members.
  • You have already been able to successfully demonstrate your very good written and spoken English skills.

What you can expect

  • You will be working at eye level with the best at one of the most popular employers.
  • Openminded colleagues are happy to welcome new talents into their ranks.
  • We offer flexible working time models and give you the opportunity to work from home at times.
  • We also foster a cooperative working atmosphere and open communication.
  • We value equal opportunities and give room for diversity.
  • You can take part in attractive sports and health offers and afterwork activities.
Remuneration is based on the degree level of your university education.
