Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

Germany is an important partner for the UK. The British Embassy Berlin works to develop relations between all parts of Germany and all parts of the UK.

Our work covers the breadth of the bilateral relationship, including political, commercial, security and economic issues of interest to both the UK and host countries, which we deliver under the framework of a Country Strategy setting out key objectives.

Roles and responsibilities might evolve, in line with the Country Strategy.


We are looking to recruit a full-time Country Based Staff
Assistant for the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) liaison team based in Germany.

HMRC is the UK's tax and customs administration and is responsible for collecting tax revenue on behalf of the UK government, making sure that money is available to fund the UK's public services.

HMRC is also charged with closing the tax gap and reducing tax avoidance and evasion.


The AO grade FCLO Assistant will work under the supervision of the senior team assistant in the same office and will be expected to provide essential administrative and logístical support to assist with the day-to-day office administration, including file management, data inputting and translation duties.

The jobholder will need to demonstrate excellent organisation skills with a practical approach to multi-tasking and high attention to detail.

This is an exciting and challenging role which will enable the jobholder to develop an understanding of HMRC strategic priorities on fiscal crime and how we are working to promote them within country through international collaboration and diplomacy.


Roles and responsibilities:

  • Conduct office administration duties under the instructions of the Fiscal Crime Liaison Officer and the senior team assistant in accordance with policy and standard operating procedures. Duties include records management; vehicle management; maintaining office accounts; maintenance of the asset register and gifts and hospitality register; planning travel and visits; and organising events;
  • Provide language support to the FCLO as directed (both written and spoken), including for exchanges of information and at official meetings and events, by using their command of business and technical German (as a fluent speaker); this may require occasional attendance at events outside of normal working hours and travel to meetings with external stakeholders in other parts of Germany;
  • Support the senior team assistant in preparing briefings as directed, including regular monthly management reporting;
  • Under the supervision of the senior team assistant, provide open source research support, especially exploitation of information sources in host language(s);
  • Monitor FCLO office mailbox and telephone so that messages are responded to in a timely fashion and / or directed as required;
  • Support broader corporate/embassy work as directed by the FCLO and the senior team assistant, especially during any crisis response.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Proficiency in English and German (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework);
  • Excellent IT skills and competent with Microsoft Office software;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Excellent organisational skills for document and record management and high attention to detail;
  • Constructive, positive and service orientated attitude;
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and written processes, working with mínimal supervision, prioritising workloads when required;
  • Ability to respect the confidentiality of work issues and understanding the personal and professional consequences of lapses in security
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience in similar administrative roles or other previous relevant experience would be an advantage.
  • Driving license and willingness to drive.
