GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science.

In the next few years, the new FAIR (
Facility for
Antiproton and
Ion
Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation.

GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.


Engineering (ENG) with its organizational units Mechanical Design (MDS), Mechanical Integration (MIN) and NC Magnets and Alignment (NCM), performs central tasks in the field of mechanical engineering for GSI and FAIR.

This includes concept development together with the requesting specialist departments, design and production support through to the digital integration of all mechanical system components as well as the fine adjustment of all system parts.

The engineering department is also responsible for the complete system of all normal-conducting magnets required for the campus.

This includes the scientific and technical layout, design, support during production, magnetic measurement, installation support and commissioning, followed by support during operation.

In its function, Engineering acts as a scientific and technical service provider for all scientific and technical facilities on campus.

For the Engineering department we are looking for a

The job holder (M/F/d) will take on the following tasks after extensive training:

  • Management of the Engineering Department (ENG)
  • Ensuring the implementation of design services agreed with internal clients
  • Supervision of external design work and integration of data into internal IT systems (CAD, PLM, archive)
  • Achievement of project goals for work packages in the department's area of responsibility
  • Strategic planning for the organization, processes and technical requirements in the Engineering department (ENG)
  • Development of system standards and ensuring compliance in Engineering (ENG)
  • Continuation and expansion of the IT strategy for construction and workshops as well as for other users of the CAD system
  • Support other organizational units with upgrade measures, new installations, shutdown work and measures to ensure accelerator operation.

Your profile:


  • Engineer (M/F/d) with a master degree and doctorate, preferably in mechanical engineering
  • Many years of international management experience in matrix organizations
  • Experience in the management of major projects in the public and private sector
  • Expertise in the design, commissioning and operation of complex machinery and equipment
  • Experience in technical systems, mechanical engineering, CAD/CAM (CATIA V5) and SAP PDM
  • Experience in the strategic alignment of organizations with analytical consideration of processes and integration in change processes
  • Structured, solutionoriented approach with strong conceptual and implementation skills
  • Quick comprehension and penetration of highly complex problems
  • Natural leader with diplomatic skills and intercultural sensitivity
  • Experience in accelerator technology, especially cryogenics and vacuum, as well as fundamentals of accelerator physics
  • Business fluent in German, fluent in English, willingness to travel worldwide.


We offer a permanent position with the salary and benefits based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund) effective at GSI.
