Beschreibung
EUMETSAT offers a wealth of Remote Sensing Earth Observation data spanning a time range of over 35 years.

Recently, EUMETSAT has been redefining its data services portfolio, creating a new set of services that offer a much improved and simplified access to the satellite data repository by leveraging big data and cloud computing technologies.

For the first time, the new EUMETSAT Data Store in combination with the Data Tailor Service allows users the access of both NRT and historic data through one mechanism - by directly downloading them from an online data repository.

However, the Data Store delivers to users a heterogeneity of formats and data structures, inherited from the various EUMETSAT programme's specifications.

The uniformity and interoperability of formats is considered a priority to improve the data uptake and impact.

Therefore, it is proposed to work on an approach to build a EUMETSAT Data Standard which does not exist today.

This Data Model - intended initially for level 2 data (geophysical products) - shall then provide the basis to implement a data standardisation/transformation to serve the Data Store products in a common format to users.

In addition, the Data Model is necessary for the definition of Analysis Ready Data that are deemed essential to allow users to interoperate efficiently large ensembles of different data.

A common Data Model would be a significant added value for the EUMETSAT online data services and could be used as a guidance relevant e.g.

for future EUMETSAT Programmes, new Satellite Application Facilities (SAF) products, etc.

This data standard is not meant to be restrictive but rather something to build on, which is expected to evolve with future needs.

The objective of the project is to analyse the feasibility of having a Data Model common to the various EUMETSAT products and to deliver a concept for a EUMETSAT Data Model/Standard.

The activity is carried out in close collaboration with EUMETSAT experts from User Support and Climate Services and data providers.

Duties:

  • Closely cooperate with EUMETSAT experts and lead the regular exchanges;
  • Analyse EUMETSAT Data Store products (structure, metadata, formats);
  • Analyse EUMETSAT selected products not included in Data Store (Climate Data Records, selected Satellite Application Facilities);
  • Analyse existing Common Data Model and format approaches (Analysis read data, ESA CCI Data Standards, C3S Common Data Model,)
  • Assess the feasibility of having a Data Model approach at EUMETSAT for Level 2 data
  • Identify common vocabulary and metadata
  • Deliver a Data Model prototype with specific description of conventions and choices

LOCATION:

  • Darmstadt, Germany
    QUALIFICATIONS:

The internships are open to bachelors and master students with mandatory internship requirements in relevant disciplines that leads to a good understanding and skills in Satellite Remote Sensing data.

Relevant studies include e.g. Data Science, Earth Science, Geophysics.
