The Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at Helmholtz Munich and the Chair of Biological Imaging (CBI) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) are an integrated, multi-disciplinary research structure and form the cornerstone of a rapidly expanding bioengineering ecosystem in Munich, Germany; including the Helmholtz Pioneer Campus and the Research Center TranslaTUM, which integrate bioengineering with metabolic disorders and oncology, respectively.

IBMI scientists develop next-generation imaging and sensing methods to measure previously inaccessible properties of living systems, hence, catalyzing breakthroughs in biology, medicine and the environment.

Responsibilities:


IBMI drives ground-breaking developments at the interface of technology and medicine, innovating imaging technologies based on optical and acoustic contrast that can be applied in basic biology research and implemented in the clinic to support non-invasive diagnostics, treatment, and management of disease.

Our portfolio includes a broad range of techniques, including fluorescence molecular imaging and tomography, optical microscopy, optoacoustic microscopy and tomography, that can generate structural and functional information about healthy and diseased tissue.

Building upon our extensive expertise in developing methods and systems, we are now focusing on the clinical translation of our techniques.


  • Design and develop optical and optoacoustic imaging systems in close collaboration with IBMI scientists
  • Fabricate miniaturized imaging sensors and catheters
  • Maintain and operate highend multimodal microscopes
  • Operate, maintain and modify a large specimen cryotome and the attached camera system in close collaboration with IBMI scientists
  • Support our laboratory staff and scientists on technical aspects of our research
  • Assist with general laboratory work, inventory, etc.
Your qualifications


The successful applicant must have the following:


  • Master degree in optical engineering, electrical engineering or a related discipline, alternatively a Bachelor degree in the respective fields with at least 4 years of relevant working experience or a vocational training as technical assistant with an extensive track record of work experience
  • Excellent grades and ideally previous job experience in a similar position
  • Experience in optics, sensors, lasers, optical fibers
  • Programming skills in MATLAB / Labview are an advantage
  • High motivation and proactive attitude
  • Flexible, independent and solutionoriented working style
  • Team player skills and enthusiasm to work in a multidisciplinary, collaborative environment
  • Excellent proficiency in English and German

Provided that the prerequisites are fulfilled, a salary level up to E 13 is possible. Social benefits are based on the collective agreement for the federal public service (TVöD). The position is (initially) limited to two years, under certain circumstances an extension can be arranged.
