The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an inter-governmental organisation headquartered in Abu Dhabi with the mandate to promote the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity.

IRENA's mission is to play a leading role in the ongoing transformation of the global energy systems as a centre of excellence for knowledge and innovation, a global voice of renewable energy, a network hub for all stakeholders and a source of advice and support for countries.

At present, IRENA has 167 Members (166 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 17 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged.


The IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre (IITC) is responsible for the provision of the means for an accelerated renewable energy technology uptake, considering national conditions of resource endowment, social and economic frameworks.

In accordance with the IRENA Statute, activities in this field include analysis of renewable energy technology policies; dissemination of information and increased awareness; technologies and equipment overview and assessment of success-failure factors; improved pertinent knowledge and technology transfer, and joint RD&D and provision of information about the development and deployment of national and international technical standards in relation to renewable energy.

Duties and Responsibilities


The purpose of the Associate Professional (AP) Programme is to enable talented university graduates and post graduates to gain first-hand experience in the work of IRENA and a deeper insight into the role of the Agency in promoting the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy.


IITC is appointing an AP to work in the Renewable Energy Cost Status and Outlook team, collecting data on renewable energy technology costs and performance and undertaking cutting-edge analysis with this data, as well as analyzing their future cost reduction potential and identifying key messages.

The focus initially is on renewable power generation, including for bioenergy, hydropower, solar PV, concentrating solar power, onshore and offshore wind; but a broad understanding of energy technologies that facilitate the energy transition (e.g., batteries) and renewable energy in the end-use sectors is also desirable.

Under the supervision of the Programme Manager for Renewable Cost Status and Outlook in IITC the AP will:

  • Systematically research and collect data on the project cost and performance of renewable energy technologies. Verify the cost and performance data, identify any potential discrepancies with best practice in order to ensure data quality is sufficient for inclusion in the Renewable Cost Database.
  • Manage IRENA's _Renewable Cost and Auction/PPA_ databases, including data collection, verification, storage, documentation, visualisation and dissemination to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Undertake standalone research projects/analysis as required to support IRENA's analysis of the costs and competitiveness of renewable technologies.
  • Provide analytical support to the Programme Manager in his analysis of renewable costs and performance, including liason with consultants as appropriate.
  • Assist the Programme Manager writeup the results of the research and analysis and draw conclusions for policy makers.
  • Assist with the preparation of reports and brochures for publication including the creation of templates for charts and tables, liasing with the publication and communications teams, as well as the design and printing companies.
  • Prepare summaries, information sheets, PowerPoint presentations, and interact with relevant stakeholders as required.
  • Represent IRENA at workshops, seminars, conferences, etc. as required.
  • Perform other tasks to assist the Programme Manager and IITC in the completion of the programme of work as required.
