Institution:

Institut und Lehrstuhl für Integrierte Photonik

Our Profile:

We operate two separate electro-optic characterization laboratories for infrared and visible-range electro-magnetic spectrums respectively.

In the past 2.5 years, IPH has set up a new micro-fabrication clean room at the Center for Research Digital Photonic Production (RCDPP), which is operated in close cooperation with the CMNT cleanroom center.

Together they form one of the largest University clusters for micro
- and nanofabrication in Europe.

Integrated Photonics has seen accelerated growth in recent years due to its ability to address bottlenecks in interconnect technologies.

Recent trends such as co-packaged optics and resource disaggregation in hyper-scale datacenters lead to the deployment of glass fiber communications at continuously shrinking architectural levels.

In this project, we are pushing this trend even further by computing with light at the chip scale. More information on the Chair's research can be found on its official website.

Your Profile:

  • Bachelor's degree and enrolled in a consecutive degree programme at one of the Aachen universities
  • Background in electrical engineering, preferably with a specialisation in microand nanoelectronics (MINA) or/and communications engineering (COMM)
  • Interest in handson photonic device and system characterization, with a knack for practical problemsolving
  • Analytical thinking and data analysis skills in MATLAB
  • Strong communication skills in English and adaptability to a diverse research team
  • Ability to stay motivated
  • Skill for communication and teamwork

Your Duties and Responsibilities:

The assignments will include:

  • Optical and electrooptic characterization of optical devices on photonic integrated circuits
  • Measurement data analysis
  • Presentation of results and reports
  • Root cause analysis in case of unexpected device performance / unexpected measurement results

What We Offer:

The position is to be filled by 4/1/2023 and offered for a fixed term of three month for now.
An extension until the end of a Master's thesis is possible.

The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).

This is a part-time contract position.
