The UFZ

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences.

We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association.

Our mission:
Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.

The job

Pollinators are threatened by multiple pressures and monitoring their status and trends is indispensable for designing appropriate conservation and restoration measures.

While international monitoring schemes are currently being piloted and on the way to being established, several major gaps remain.

Modern technologies, such as computer vision, can complement such approaches to help overcome key monitoring gaps by increasing taxonomic and geographic coverage, speed, accuracy, content and efficiency of identification, and temporal resolution.

Within the EU-project MAMBO, we are looking for a highly motivated scientist to test and improve novel and fully automated insect camera systems and subsequently AI-based detection and classification algorithms, and to relate observed multi-species patterns to environmental pressures.

A further synthesis of multi-source data from automated systems will improve our ability to reliably identify the main drivers of spatio-temporal change, their interrelations and context dependencies to better understand and counteract pollinator declines.

Your tasks

  • To deploy and test insect camera systems in the field
  • To program Raspberry PIs in Python to run the cameras
  • To analyse and synthesise resulting data in combination with available environmental data (e.g. from remote sensing)
  • To test the usability of highresolution species activity patterns for a mechanistic assessment of the ecological niches of multiple species
  • To synthesise information from multiple data sources
  • To present results in recognised scientific journals and at international scientific conferences
We offer

  • Excellent technical facilities which are without parallel
  • Work in interdisciplinary, multinational teams and excellent links with national and international research networks
  • A vibrant region with a high quality of life and a wide cultural offering for a balance between family and professional life
  • Interesting career opportunities and an extensive range of training and further education courses

Profile:

  • Master in Ecology, Biodiversity, or related disciplines
  • Background in computational ecology
  • Programming skills (Python, R)
  • Experience in using automated monitoring systems
  • Experience in field work (advantageous)
  • Experience in GIS (advantageous)
  • Driving license (required)
  • Good writing skills (required)
  • Good English proficiency
