Employment Category Regular Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Education Program Assistant 2 position for the Division of Extension and Engagement's Family and Community Health Program at Oregon State University (OSU). This position is located in Salem, Oregon.

    This bilingual Education Program Assistant 2 (EPA2) position serves Marion County. This position is with the Extension Family and Community Health (FCH) program, affiliated with OSU's College of Health and is based at the Extension Marion County office in Salem, Oregon.

    This position has a priority designation for engaging Spanish-speaking audiences by utilizing strong Spanish language skills and applying understanding of cultural traditions and norms of Spanish-speaking community members.

    Extension programs in the College of Health align toward a common vision of lifelong health and well-being for individuals, families, and communities. The central purpose of this position is to extend the knowledge and research of OSU to the communities of Oregon in a manner that is responsive to local needs and respectful of local norms and culture. The incumbent joins a network of campus-and community-based Extension faculty and staff who share this responsibility for community engagement.

    Purpose of the Position
    The Education Program Assistant 2 position is part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed) Program, a nutrition education program in Extension Family and Community Health (FCH). Extension educators provide evidence-based interventions through SNAP-Ed, a nutrition education program targeting SNAP eligible audiences. Programs are designed to promote healthy eating habits and a physically active lifestyle. All programming is done in collaboration with community partners, such as schools, food banks and pantries, and government and non-profit agencies. Funding is provided in part by USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) through a contract with Oregon Department of Human Services.

    The EPA2 is responsible for developing programs and collaborative community partnerships independently, initiating program changes with the input of state and county program coordinators, and providing lead work to volunteers.

    This position will work under the supervision of the Extension Marion FCH/SNAP-Ed Managing Faculty Member. Programs are implemented in a manner that measures impact, fosters program improvement and strengthens community connections. This position requires travel to various sites within the Marion County.

    40% – Nutrition Education Delivery Collaborates with faculty to determine overall program goals and objectives.

    Works independently to deliver non-credit educational programs (in Spanish and English), using OSU Extension Service/SNAP-Ed approved curricula, materials and information.

    Develops written materials and activities to supplement curriculum as requested.

    Develops and initiates program changes with the input of state and county program coordinators.

    Conducts educational presentations at fairs and community events. This will require driving/travel to various county sites to deliver programming, and the ability to transport educational materials.

    Provides classroom management practices as necessary.

    Delivers programming discussed above in a hybrid (virtual/in person) format.

    20% – Nutrition Education: Planning, Preparing, and Evaluating Collaborates with faculty to identify and engage local partners and stakeholders in community assessment, program design, implementation and evaluation of programs.

    Initiates and maintains collaborative community partnerships independently.

    Promotes nutrition education programming in conjunction with a faculty member through news releases, articles, social media posts, and public service announcements; giving public presentations in person, radio, or television; and designing and/or maintaining website.

    Uses technology as a tool to increase the reach and impact of program delivery.

    Follows OSU and division brand guidelines, digital publishing standards and digital contact management data integrity practices for programmatic communications, marketing and engagement.Develops and maintains educational content for displays and exhibits.

    Engages community partners, volunteers and community members in a culturally responsive manner.

    Verifies group/class set up and nutrition topics/lessons with site contact and assists in preparation and ordering of instructional supplies needed for classes.

    Assists with the coordination and training of community and program volunteers.

    Assists in assembling materials needed for classes and other nutrition education activities.

    Purchases appropriate materials for educational activities, including ingredients for food preparation and tasting.

    Participates in evaluation of program effectiveness.

    Coordinates with Nutrition Education faculty member to select educational resources, activities, and handouts to implement nutrition education materials designed for youth, adults and/or families, following federal and state SNAP-Ed and OSU Extension Service guidelines.

    Engages actively with faculty, staff and volunteers in the delivery of SNAP-Ed interventions/strategies to SNAP-Ed eligible youth, adults and families.

    Contributes positively to team projects in SNAP-Ed and the OSU Extension Service in Marion County.

    Contributes to equity, inclusion, and diversity as part of non-credit educational delivery, advising, and service. Outputs and impacts of efforts to promote equity, inclusion, and diversity should be included in quarterly and annual reports.

    20% – Nutrition Education Program Records Record-keeping: Maintains class, meeting, and assessment records, attendance records, evaluation data, paperwork; verifies for accuracy; submits all required records upon completion of classes, meetings, and assessments for state and federal reporting; submits quarterly success stories -"Stories from the Field;" reports activities and their impacts into the Extension's reporting system, coordinating with their managing faculty member; processes reimbursements for personal vehicle mileage for work travel and supplies purchased; provides other data/statistical information/records as requested.

    Utilizes database on occasion for SNAP-Ed programming.

    Compiles and summarizes evaluation data and program statistics as requested by SNAP-Ed Managing Faculty Member.

    10% –Policy, System, Environmental Change Collaborates with SNAP-Ed Managing Faculty Member and community partners to identify areas for policy, system, and environmental change within the community.

    Works as part of a team to conduct nutrition and physical activity assessments.

    Collaborates with SNAP-Ed Managing Faculty Member to implement strategies/interventions in the school/community environment that support and encourage healthy eating habits and physically active lifestyles, such as implementing the Food Hero campaign strategies.

    Collaborates with Managing Faculty Member to use technology to develop marketing strategies and utilize appropriate print and digital tools to reach intended audience segments.

    Participates actively in school and/or community committees/coalitions to encourage healthy eating habits and physically active lifestyles.

    Informs supervisors and program designers about community cultural norms and best ways to reach the target audiences

    5% – Program Assistance/Lead work and Coordination Coordinates and assists with training of new staff, volunteers or interns.

    Assigns, plans and reviews work of student workers and interns as directed by supervisor.

    Coordinates the recruitment and selection of trainers and volunteers.

    Schedules staff to provide coverage at educational programs and events.

    Coordinates educational programs with principals, teachers and community partners.

    5% – Meetings & Trainings and Other Duties Attends scheduled Nutrition Education meetings and trainings.

    Participates in relevant statewide/regional conferences, workshops, and trainings.

    Attends training opportunities to build basic knowledge and consistent skills to use digital communications, marketing and engagement technologies relevant to position duties.

    Attends Extension Service County office staff meetings and participates in OSU Extension Service activities as directed.

    Performs other duties as assigned. What We Require

    Associate's Degree and three years of work experience (paid or volunteer) supporting community programs that serve children, youth or adults OR Bachelor's Degree and one year of work experience (paid or volunteer) one year of which must be working in youth development programs, adult education, teaching, program delivery or related functions OR Five years experience in a field related to the duties of the position AND a high school diploma or equivalent. AND Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated skill to work with diverse audiences. Demonstrated skill to use computers for word processing, data management, and communications.

    This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy What We Would Like You to Have
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience/education (paid or volunteer) relevant to nutrition education or related health community programs that serve children, youth, and adults.
  • Experience working with people or groups experiencing disadvantages, who have historically and intentionally been excluded and/or people with lower incomes.

  • Ability to learn and adapt to using multiple forms of digital communication systems, including websites, email newsletters, social media, and other tools in a changing technological environment.
