Beschreibung

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government.

AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

  • PhD Position in "Polar geophysics" (M/F/d)

Background

The long-standing paradigm that the East Antarctic Ice Sheet remains relatively stable, while only the marine-based West Antarctic Ice Sheet is vulnerable to the currently progressing climate change, has been challenged.

The ice sheet around Denman Glacier in the Davis Sea sector has recently been identified as potentially vulnerable to incursions of warm deep water.

Records of its behavior during past warm periods will provide constraints on this vulnerability. The main database of this project consist of existing and newly acquired seismic reflection data.

A developed seismic stratigraphy, linked to ocean drilling sites, is expected to contain patterns of glacially transported sediments from erosion to deposition and, thus, enable a quantification of periods of major ice sheet advances and retreats.

The reconstruction of glacial dynamics, in particular those of past warm times, e.g.

in the Oligocene, Mid-Miocene and Pliocene to Pleistocene, will be used to feed the parameterization of paleo-ice sheet modelling simulations.

The goal is to reveal the vulnerability of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet in warm periods in comparison to observations and models for the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Tasks

You are expected to:

  • Process multichannel seismic reflection data
  • Compile and analyse a large East Antarctic and Southern Ocean seismic dataset for detailed seismic stratigraphy and sequence characteristics from preglacial to glacial times by linking to existing drill core records
  • Reconstruct an East Antarctic Ice Sheet dynamic model from early Antarctic glaciation in the Eocene/Oligocene to younger periods in the Pliocene and Pleistocene
  • Focus in particular on data signatures that indicate intense periods of icesheet growth and retreat
  • Present results at national/international conferences and in peerreviewed publications

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in geophysics, physics, geology or geosciences
  • Experience in analysing multichannel seismic reflection data
  • Experience or strong interest in analysing marine sedimentary processes for paleoclimate research objectives
  • Interest in the scientific exchange with an interdisciplinary group of international scientists
  • High level of proficiency in written and spoken English
