EMBL is Europe's life sciences laboratory - an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology.

It operates across six sites in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Cambridge, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome.

Our mission is to perform basic research in molecular biology; train scientists, students and visitors at all levels; offer vital services to scientists in the public and private sectors within the member states; develop new instruments and methods; and engage actively in technology transfer.


We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and experienced Spanish-speaking Communications Officer to support communications for our research site in Barcelona and our wider activities in Spain for a period of six months.

Your role


A self-starter and comfortable working autonomously, you will play an important role in engaging stakeholders, partners and the public with the fascinating research, technology development, training and multinational services carried out at EMBL.


The position is based at EMBL's headquarter in Heidelberg, Germany, and you will work closely with colleagues at EMBL Barcelona and across all of EMBL's six sites.

You will be a member of the EMBL-wide Communications Department reporting directly to the Engagement Lead in Heidelberg.

You will have responsibility for a full range of internal and external communications and stakeholder support functions in relation to our Barcelona site, Spain and, as a member of the wider Communications Department, globally.


We are an international, friendly and supportive team, with ties to scientists and professionals throughout European and global life sciences and supportive technologies.


Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing and maintaining active and effective relations with science journalists, science communications professionals, and local communication partners in Spain
  • Identifying and producing high quality content for multiple channels (media, social media and internal communications)
  • Writing and editing content in English, Spanish and Catalan
  • Organising interviews and media visits, and briefing and training spokespeople
  • Monitoring and evaluating the impact of EMBL's media work in collaboration with the EMBL Press Officer
  • Ensuring flow of information between the Communications team based at all sites and EMBL Barcelona
  • Acting as contact on communications and engagement matters for relevant head office units, including, but not limited to International Relations, schools education, Resource Development Alumni Relations and EDI office.

You have

  • An excellent command of spoken and written English and Spanish
  • Several years of experience in a communications and/or mediarelations role, ideally in a sciencebased environment at international level
  • A proactive, open and professional attitude
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to manage conflicting priorities
  • Able to work independently as well as in the context of a team
  • A passion for science and the ability to communicate confidently and clearly about complex scientific issues
You might also have

  • Experience in working with social media and organizing various types of outreach events is advantageous
  • Knowledge of other languages besides Spanish and English, particularly Catalan, German or French, is advantageous
  • Experience working in an international environment is an asset
  • An ability to travel occasionally to other EMBL sites and to Spain
