A vacancy for an Internship and/or Master Thesis within the Overall Structural & Aeromechanics squad (M/F/d) in the Urban Air Mobility team has arisen in Donauwörth.

Airbus Urban Mobility (AUM) aims at laying the foundation for more efficient and sustainable city travel.

To co-create an entire industry from scratch, we will develop cutting-edge technical solutions as well as engage with a wide range of stakeholders to build the necessary ecosystem and to ensure maximum societal benefit.


In line with our purpose of pioneering sustainable aviation, we are using the emerging eVTOL domain (electrical vertical take-off and landing) to open up the sky in cities and to offer a mobility solution for the third dimension.

This might still sound futuristic but Vahana and CityAirbus have proven the technical readiness.

Now, it is about maturing the vehicle design, certifying according to the brand-new standards and preparing the operational environment so that we can "Go Vertical".


Your Role
You will be part of the Aeromechanics squad within the start-up like entity Airbus Urban Mobility GmbH.

AUM GmbH has been set up as the central entrepreneur of the UAM organization within the Group and acts as the program for the eVTOL development as well as the system integrator for UAM.

In that context, it covers the pillars vehicle, take-off & landing infrastructure and (unmanned) traffic management to prepare the integration in cities and future commercial passenger operations.


Your focus lies on the simulation with CFD- and Free-Wake/Panel Methods of the flight mechanic behavior for a complex aerodynamic vehicle.


We are interested in starting with an internship to build up the required knowledge & skills and finish with a master thesis.


Scope of thesis:


  • Get familiar with the existing simulation tools and toolchains for preprocessing, simulation and postprocessing applied at Airbus Helicopters within this project
  • Get familiar with the existing eVTOL simulation and existing interaction modeling approaches
  • Analysis of the simulated data and derive improvements / extensions of the existing realtime simulation models.
  • Implementation into our flight mechanical toolchain and validation by selected flight states and manoeuvers
The results may be at least partly confidential.

Therefore for a bachelor / master thesis or internship report an agreement with the supervising University will be required beforehand.


Your Qualifications and Skills

  • Enrolled full time master student within Aerospace Engineering, engineering (model building, fluid mechanics) or similar field of study
  • Background in the fields of aerodynamics and flight mechanics
  • Experience within Linux and programming are of advantage
  • Interest to work in an international and multicultural environment
  • English Fluent, German helpful
