Beschreibung

With over 300 employees, the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials
IWMhas been for 50 years one of the leading institutes in Europe for predicting the behaviour of materials using simulations and scientific experiments.

As part of a research group funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the microstructure evolution in adiabatic shear bands (ASB) during high-speed shear cutting of sheet metal is investigated.

A mean-field model for recrystallization implemented in Python is extended in order to describe the particular kind of microstructure evolution (grain fragmentation) in ASBs.

What you will do

  • You will be introduced to the existing meanfield recrystallization model
  • You will perform literature research on modelling approaches for grain fragmentation
  • You will extend the recrystallization model by a formulation for grain fragmentation
  • You will perform parameter studies with the extended model
  • You will optimize the model parameters using experimental data
  • You will systematically investigate the influence of the initial microstructure and the loading on the microstructure evolution in ASB

What you bring to the table

  • You are enrolled and majoring in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, materials science, materials engineering, or a related discipline
  • You are interested in materials characterization, their structure, and properties
  • You have good knowledge of continuum mechanics, material modelling, and numerical methods
  • You have basic programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, Mathematica)
  • You are motivated to do scientific and at the same time industryoriented research
  • You are able to work independently and have critical thinking skills
  • You have very good written and spoken German and English skills

What you can expect

  • Structured orientation: we will maintain your start at the
    IWMand give the right support
  • Flexible working hours to ensure your worklife balance
  • An open, collegial working environment and a good insight into the division of »Forming Processes«

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process.

As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
