Job Summary/Purpose:


  • The Head Liabilities & Remediation provides global governance and leadership on environmental matters for all Sandoz' site assets (land and buildings) throughout their life cycle (from M&A due diligence over acquisition and operations to retirement via closure or divestment). He/she proactively leads all aspects of environmental liabilities remediation, reporting, and governance activities and ensure compliance with regulatory matters.
    Your Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Overall Environmental Liability Leadership

  • Implements an endtoend management of environmental liabilities related to existing operations, predecessor companies, and potential liabilities related to mergers, acquisition, divestment, and asset retirement, and sets clear objectives for the team in line with the ongoing business transformation strategies and overall Sandoz strategy and vision.
  • Leads assessment of environmental liabilities for acquisitions and divestments and advises key stakeholders including Group M&A and Legal teams on strategy to minimize short and longterm risks to the company.
  • Negotiate terms of environmental matters agreements on all transactions and serve as single point escalation for any unacceptable environmental risks.
  • Reviews and approves quarterly SOX financial reporting and disclosures of environmental liabilities and liaisons with external auditing representatives, acting as "Technical Authority" for the organization
  • Provides direction for the appropriate accounting accruals for environmental liabilities.
  • Working with Legal, provides strategic and tactical leadership for sites with high public visibility and potential reputational risk.
  • Working with RE portfolio management, strategically assess land use scenarios (industrial, commercial, residential) for future site divestments to maximize real estate transaction values.
  • Lead development of technical guidelines for implementation of contaminated site remedial measures.
  • Coach and mentor, the team of regional and site Managers, and external partners.

Contamination specific Implementation and Operations

  • Governance: Oversees compliance with all pertinent regulations pertaining to contaminated site remediation globally including permits, statutes, local ordinances and/or other externally or internally driven requirements.
  • Ensures that systems are in place to demonstrate and verify conformance to manage environmental liabilities, remediation of contaminated sites, financial reporting, environmental due diligence for acquisitions, management of divestments, site closure and internal Novartis requirements.   • Reviews and approves Capital Authorization Requests for environmental aspects related to real estate and business acquisitions, real estate and facility divestments, and facility closures and asset retirement.
  • Leads the implementation of key highrisk contaminated site management projects, and manages ongoing requirements related to environmental matters contained within site and property divestments.
  • Completes environmental due diligence activities for acquisitions, divestments, and supports facility closures.
  • Ensures that effective and efficient Asset Lifecycle and retirement process, tools and capabilities are provided to the regions.
  • Collaborates with the various teams and third parties and uses their unique functional perspective to ensure business insights drive continuous improvement towards excellence in service delivery related to environmental liability matters
  • Acts as the final level of escalation globally for contaminated site issues, and assists the REFS delivery partners through coordination of the implementation of solutions and the resolution of regional/global level issues
  • Inputs into Group FRA, Country CFO's and CPO Organizations on environmental liabilities and emerging risks and opportunities

Minimum requirements

What you'll bring to the role:

  • Relevant university degree in environmental science/planning
  • English, and at least one regionally relevant local language is preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of direct experience managing teams concluding complex environmental remediation projects globally
  • Proven track record of successfully completing complex property transa
