The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government.

AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.


  • Student Assistant (HIWI, M/F/d): Maintenance and care of different microalgae cultures

Background

Maintenance and care of different microalgae cultures for the support on the cultivation of mixotrophic culture of cyanobacteria Spirulina and its effect on the quality of the commercially relevant pigments.

The project "MixoArthroPigment" aims for the mixotrophic cultivation of Spirulina
_Arthrospira platensis_) using glucose as a carbon source is an innovative proposed solution to produce low chlorophyll concentrated biomass that could be used in food industry as a high-protein supplement.


Tasks
During your time as a student assistant, you will participate in the following tasks:

  • establishment of pelagic diatom culture methodology
- care and maintenance of microalgae cultures
- development of new microalgae culture systems
- different experimental approaches with microalgae


Requirements:

- previous experience with microalgae culturing and aquaculture
- experienced lab worker
- team worker

Experiments and work will be conducted at the Centre for Aquaculture Research (ZAF) and in the ZMFE, in
