The Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, investigates the attentional, cognitive, and affective mechanisms of aesthetic perception and evaluation.

Student Assistant (M/F/x)

for 80 hours per month

to work in the Department of Cognitive Neuropsychology.

An overall goal of the department is to increase our understanding of the neural mechanisms that underpin human expertise, skill learning and creativity.

In most of this work, we use music as a model domain.


Innovative studies often require innovative tools and here at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics we are constantly developing new ones.

For this reason we are looking to hire a Student Assistant ("Hiwi") to help develop software tools for scientific use in our MusicLab and ArtLab.


Your tasks:

- motion capturing and analysis;
- pose estimation;
- object detection and tracking;
- customize and integrate machine learning solutions for a specific study or use case;
- develop and test tools for processing outputs from machine learning solutions;
- develop and test systems for motion capturing and analysis;
- documentation writing.


Our requirements:

- status as MSc student, preferably in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or Communication Technology, Computer Science, or related field (exceptionally well-qualified Bachelor's students may also be considered);
- experience with Computer Vision and Image Processing;
- experience with Python;
- fluency in German and English;
- independent, reliable, and structured work manner;
- team spirit and problem-solving mindset;
- experience in the following areas is an advantage: camera-based object tracking; machine learning; OpenCV, MediaPipe or similar computer vision and machine learning libraries; Python (Conda) virtual environments; GIT; developing for Linux platforms.
