Retuning synaptic dynamics using deep brain stimulation - from human single cell recordings to therapeutic circuit interventions

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common movement disorder that has been associated with excessive oscillatory and neuronal synchronization of basal ganglia circuits.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) disrupts this pathological synchronization, but neuronal and synaptic circuit underpinnings of this intervention are of ongoing debate.

This project aims to promote direct translation of findings from human single cell recordings acquired during DBS surgery. Thus, it aims to pave the way for tailored neuronal circuit interventions delivered by DBS.

Methods developments/implementation, participation in further development of experimental design
Acquisition of neuronal activity and performing behavioral testing of Parkinson's Disease patients during DBS implantation surgeries as part of specialized team consisting of Neurologists, Neurosurgeons and Neuroscientists
Analysis of electrophysiological data and development of innovative analysis pipelines for real time analysis
Participation in the scientific network activity provided by sfb-;
In depth academic reading and writing
Present findings at (inter-)national conferences and prepare scientific publications
Scientific staff is given sufficient time to carry out their own scientific work in accordance with their employment relationship

Danach suchen wir

Driving interest in translational Neurophysiology and investigation of the mechanism of action of DBS
Knowledge of (cellular) neurophysiology and neuroanatomy, data acquisition and analysis, biostatistics, and signal processing or the willingness and capability to quickly acquire this knowledge are essential
German and English language proficiency are required to interact with patients and present data on (inter-) national conferences
